The women discus event was quite exciting to watch. The positions for the medals has changed couple of times throughout the competition. The German discus thrower Marike Steinacker was leading the competition with her first round effort of 58.13m. Yulia Maltseva, who has a personal best of 63.48m, opened the competition with 56.54m to stay in the silver medal position after the first round.

She improved further in round four to 57.75m to underline her ambition for the podium.

In round 5 a couple of positions has changed. The Italian discus thrower Stefania Strumillo improved to 58.22m, overtaking not just Subenrat Insaeng, but also the German Marike Steinacker.  Marike could not improve during the 5th round and hence Stefania Strumillo was in the silver position when the 5th round has finished.
