Best performance in the second competition after the injury break! Shot Putter Christina Schwanitz threw outstanding 20.77m on Wednesday and won the World Challenge meeting in Beijing (China) and thereby also beat local hero Lijiao Gong. This massive toss places Christina as the number one in the world.
What a comeback after knee surgery in September and months of rehab. Just around 36 centimeters boosted Vice World Champion Christina Schwanitz in Beijing, the venue for the World Cup in August, her home record, which she achieved at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow (Russia). At that time Kiwi Valerie Adams won the gold medal with 20.88m. Since then, no one tossed the 4kg ball further until Wednesday.
Since the competition in Beijing the German champion has now eleven competitions with distances beyond 20 meters in her account. She is one of only three Germans who were able to go beyond the 20-meter since the turn of the millennium. That a German came even further as Schwanitz is already nearly 18 years ago: On September 13, 1997 Astrid Kumbernuss won with 20.95 meters in Fukuoka (Japan). Two years earlier, she had become with 21.22 meters world champion, as well as in 1997 (20.71 m) and 1999 (19.85 m). Christina Schwanitz still missing that title so far. But in her current form defending champion Valerie Adams will have to beware.
Anita Wlodarczyk over 77 meters
Another outstanding distance was the hammer throw women where world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland) hurled the device to 77.73 meters and thus collected the maximum points of the Hammer Throw World Challenge of the IAAF. It was the eighth best result of her career.
