Halle Werfertage, Day 1: Robert Harting takes the world leading

Halle, Germany, 21.05.2011 - Germany´s favorite -the reigning world discus champion Robert Harting puts on a show in the men´s discus with the world leading throw of 68.99 m. His less known collegue Martin Wierig , also from Germany, surprised with his new lifetime best - massive 67.21 m in the first round. His previous best was 65.79 m, today he had three throws better than that.

Benn Harradine (AUS) threw his seasons best 66.07 which is just under his lifetime best (66.45) while Lithuania´s 2-time Olympic champion and the most awarded athlete on the field had 64.63 in the second round that was good just for the 4th place. Fifth was Markus Münch (GER) with his seasons best throw of 63.82 m that means Germany has turned into a throwers factory.

In the women´s discus, the reigning Asian champion Yanfeng Li (CHN) threw the second best result this season - 66.18 m which is 22 cm less than her lifetime best 66.40 m. Nadine Müller (GER) was 2nd with her seasons best 66.05 and Kateryna Karsak (UKR) 3rd with 63.02 m.

On the men´s shot put field - Dylan Armstrong (CAN) won with 21.54 m which is almost as good as his seasons and this years world best result so far - 21.72 m. He was almost a meter ahead of his opponent Ralf Bartels (GER) - former European Champion- who had a 20.58 m toss. Germany´s miracle David Storl was third with 20.56 m. His lifetime best stands on 20.77 m (indoors) since 2010.
