Discus Thrower Smith qualifies for European Championships in Amsterdam

Discus Thrower Rutger Smith has qualified for the European Athletics Championships next month in Amsterdam. 

The 34-year-old Groninger, who lives and trains in the United States, met the qualification standard  at a competition last Sunday. He came to a distance of 63.37 meters, his best performance this season.

Smith, who became numerous times the Dutch champion, wants to participate in the shot put and discus at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.

Smith, who has a long period of injuries behind him, has to throw the discus a little bit further. To qualify for the Olympics a distance of 65 meters is required. It will be his fourth Olympic Games if he is going to meet the qualification standard .

The European Athletics Championships begins on July 6 and lasts until 10th July.
