Christine Schwanitz comes a little bit closer to her top form at a Schwarzwald meeting. David Storl fails at the 21-meter mark.
Shot put world champion Christina Schwanitz has shown improving form before the Rio Olympics in nearly two months. The 30-year-old came on Sunday at Black Forest meeting in Schapbach to 19.41 m and improved from yesterday's competition in Gotha. At her comeback after nine months forced break, Schwanitz had finished the competition with 19.05 m. From her best (20.77), she is still far away.
Two-time world champion David Storl failed meanwhile at the 21 m mark. The 25-year-old won with 20.84 meters but did not come to his 21.01m toss from the meeting in Osterode in late May. In his season debut Storl, who underwent surgery in the fall at the knee, had tossed the 7kg ball to 20.2m in Halle.
Schwanitz had to undergo surgery also at the knee after the world title in Beijing last year. At the beginning of the season, she hurt her shoulder. Until Rio, a lot of work is waiting for them.
"If I did not think that I can do it, then I would not do any competitions," Schwanitz said. In the world rankings currently the Chinese Gong Lijiao leads with 20.43 m.
