Road to Beijing: Barbara Nwaba

Barbara Udoezi Nwaba (18 January 18 1989) is an American who represents the Santa Barbara Track Club. Nwaba is known for the multi events, pentathlon and heptathlon. She is the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Champion in the heptathlon.

How has your training been going recently?

Training has been going great! It took me a week or two to recover from [USANationals but now I'm back on a regular routine. Most importantly I'm healthy.

What is the focus of your training schedule?

The focus of my training schedule right now is to not over do it. Rather the goal has been to continue what I've been doing in the weight room and on the track and basically fine tune my events.

Is there anything new you are implementing into your training?

At this point in the season no.

What technical issues are you working on?

I've been working on hitting positions in shot and javelin. My warmup/competition throws at Nationals were too inconsistent and I felt all over the place. Nerves could have played a factor but I'm glad I have a little more time to work on it.

Where are you currently training?

Santa Barbara, California, USA at Westmont College.

Will you be attending any training camps at another site? If so, where and when?

Yes in Japan, a little more than a week before competition.

Who is your current coach?

Josh Priester. He encouraged me to start the heptathlon my sophomore year (2008) at UCSB and has been my coach ever since. Lucky for me he has a passion for the multis and started an elite training group once I graduated. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for him and all he's done

Are you training with your coach on site or long distance?

I train with my coach on site year round with the Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC). We're a group of elite heptathletes and decathletes. My coach has actually been on a much needed vacation these past ten days [laughter] and has been checking in regularly. But he'll be back for my last few weeks of training.

Are you currently working a job? If so, what and how many hours a week?

Work is pretty low key. My only job right now is coaching for the SBTC Youth Club that meets times a week and private training. I get great support from Abeo, part of The Walking Company.

What competitions do you have planned?

None in the [United] States. There will be a small meet held at training camp a few days after I arrive.

When will you travel to Asia?

I leave August 12.

Will any friends or family be traveling to Beijing?

Yes! My Mom, Blessing and boyfriend Tom FitzSimons (who will have competed in the Jim Thorpe Cup in Germany a week prior). My coach Josh, his wife Nicole and his parents Jeff and Kathy, and my long jump coach Doug Beatty,.

Looks like you have a great support system. Do you have any sponsors?

I'm sponsored by Abeo. It's an in store brand of The Walking Company.
I'm super excited for my first World Championships! It's always an honor to wear the USA jersey! Thanks for the interview.
