@Lachlan Page very jealous of your setup

plan on going to the track about once a week for real throwing and measuring. Just think throwing into the net and using technology we can instantly make changes to technique and instantly see the results. Can also get more throws done in a shorter timeframe

@Lachlan Page I have seen videos of you throwing into your net in the shed. Wonder if you have ever or would consider using this formula and to see how accurate it really is
-
yes @Odysseus it is the height of the release. The most important variable though is speed and that is what you are all trying to achieve by doing weights etc. I just thought about this when @James Joycey asked the question can you throw further than 20 m without lifting 200kg. At the end of the day it is how fast you can throw the implement

I found the formula. I will just ask permission to publish it. Hopefully I am clever enough to put in a spreadsheet formula. It claims to work for discus/shot/Jav and hammer. Although it would not allow for wind for discus and Jav (does wind affect hammer). I am excited about it because you can do lots of practice into a net and using a tool like Kinovea you can get the velocity, angle and height and then calculate the approx distance.

sorry here is the web page Discus Technique and Training
-
hi the following web page calculates the distance for a shotput throw given angle, height of release and speed of release. There is a similar one for discus. Does anyone know what the excel formula for this would be? The reason I want this is I can use this to calculate distance when throwing into a net.

great place to be throwing!
-
@Richard Callister that looks like a pretty crappy ring/net for a the NZ championships. Is it being redeveloped?
-
@Jake Stephens have you ever timed yourself from start of throw to end. I would be interested to see the result. Then maybe with your technique improvements you are going to make as per your video then time it again. Kinovea (freeware) lets you put a timer on it. I as a complete amateur have had a go it and I think you take about 1.9 seconds

@Odysseus ok we start a bit earlier here in Aus as 6 years. Ok I am just talking about training. We were going to be training with a 3kg (6.5 pounds) this year anyway even though we have 1 more year with 2kg.

Holy Hell! 50?!?! Maybe between med-ball drills, warm-ups, and a dozen throws at 90-100%
50 throws at full effort... My arm would fall off...you'd be giving an 'old' guy a whole new working definition of cardio, lol...and maybe an AMI to follow. 20/25 is usually my limit before I see significantly diminished gains. If I decide to go over 20, I'll switch to the 14; because now you're talking about possibly introducing some new bad habits due to exhaustion.
However, I'm thinking about implementing an old concept from back in...you guessed it...the 60s....pioneered by Randy Matson's coach. The concept is to keep training hard with your weights/whatever you do(PLYOS!!!) but to cycle
1: 4weeks heavy shot(18),
2: 4 weeks light shot(14),
3: 4 weeks 16lb ball,
record results...the principal here is speed vs power training. How fast is the athlete moving that arm(the 14) and with how much force(18)? This training modification addresses both of these.I realize in HS and college we have two- and three- sport athletes so this may not be ideal. But for me, I have the luxury of training ALL THE TIME. And if all they do is throw, this program will be a match made in heaven... After 10-12 weeks, there will be gains, believe me, try it, ya might like what ya get!
so are you saying that do not train with the different weight shots in the same session? We should just train with the heavy shot (or discus) for a number of weeks then go back to the lighter implement?. My son is only 9 and his throw weights are 500 grams (discus) and 2kg shot. I cannot see the point in going lighter than that for training. Only heavier

excellent. looked at Train Light Throw Big. He is advocating around 50 shotput throws surely nobody does this many shots

@Norm Zylstra what would be handy in these videos if they showed at normal speed and one at say a 10th of speed. Can easily be done in microsoft movie maker.
@Jake Stephens too much jump out of the back. It should be more a soccer pass kick. This is covered in Primal ATC videos. If you trace the path of the discus you can see because of this big jump it is going up and down throughout the rotation instead of being kept as horizontal as possible.

hi especially for the Americans how would this be for throwing discus and shot into looks to be a good deal. Is baseball net size good enough?
Baseball Nets | Baseball Netting, Baseball Net - 10 x 10 Baseball Net
-
yes looking at this I think you really need to work on the block to get a better path. Primal ATC covers this in his videos. I tried to trace the path and it is definitely going from right to left. I think your separation could improve at the front as well as your upper body and lower body seem to be turning at the same time. Focus your eyes on something at the back of the ring to stop your upper body turning to early
-
I would have thought filming from side (ie not from behind) on was more valuable as well. Then you can tell if they are in a good power position.
-
could you get your elbow pointing down more on the block to give a better path for the ball
-
it was absolutely amazing. I am no expert but it looked like Gill's left heel was touching the ground on the pivot. Think he needs to go back to DP.
