That's why our system might not be the best one...
Sure it is good that the young fellowers get a shot to make the team...
but the main disadvantage I see here is that our throwers have to peak so early and will not be able to produce the same at the world champs later on.... Leading to Storl winning third time in the row...

Right now I think David Storl is the man to beat at the WC...
Despite the fact he is not leading the top list....
He always peaks at the main event of the year... and see where he is now already... close to 22m.
Every year he adds another 30-40cm on top of his season best at the main event... so 22.30m has someone to beat ?!

But at the DL meeting in doha he "only" tossed the shot 20.86m

He has three competitions beyond the 22m mark!

First I must say I think its great that Hoffa gets a chance to compete at his age again at the WC.
But we should not forget Christian Cantwell in that perspective!

If he can get the shot right he will be able to throw beoynd 22m as well, dont you think?

he will not be in shape to do that...
lets check his recent results:
his best attempt is 21.64m so far and he is not known to peak at the wc .... i highly doubt he will play a major role at the competition.
The entire season he had trouble going beyond even 21m

I predict David Storl will be the winner....
Sharing the same thoughts as @Dylan Wilson has.
Having in mind the usual peak at the event of the year, be it World Championships or Olympic Games he is the man to be right on spot in best shape.

I also think David is going to win, but that is only because he is my favourite shot putter. Its not that he has an advantage over the americans, because many americans has had seasons bests or very close to a seasons best on world champs or olympics in the past (sometimes further than they had thrown at the trials). I'm not saing that it isn't difficult to peak for the trials and perform at your best at the worlds, but it is possible. Whoever wins , I really hope they finally break the championship record.

How far is that? I dont know that on top of my head

Kovacks being really good right now and Storl.
Maybe they push each other to their limits..

Many shot put greats has come very close to breaking that record (most recently Cantwell at 2009 worlds) but the record has been standing for 28 years wich definitely makes it one of the longest standing throwing records in the world. I can just imagine how much it would mean to the guy who finally breaks the record.
