Discussion of article RUMOR: IAAF Hoping to Drop Hammer from Olympics:

    Quote
Word from the backrooms of Sopot is that more than one IAAF administrator is working to eliminate the hammer and walks from all IAAF meets, including the World Championships and Olympics. While this is rumor, it is so serious that those with access must investigate and see that the IAAF is transparent in their dealings with our sport. We do not want to fall down the same well as wrestling.

A welcome and reassuring response from the Senior Vice President at the IAAF Bob Hersh,

    "The reason you…
  • I trust nobody serious would even consider this idea. Hopefully it is just a bad rumour.
Hammer Throw is an international event.
In the current All-Athletics.com World Rankings 35 countries are represented in the Top-100 of the Men's Hammer Throw while 32 countries are represented in the Women's HT.
    As for comparison: Men's 100m 35 countries, Men's 5000m 30 countries. Women's 100m 38 countries, Women's 5000m 28 countries.

BTW: Do you know which country has the most Athletes in the Top-100 of the All-Athletics.com World Rankings in the Men's HT?

  • I coach young, up and coming hammer throwers - what would they have to aim for - scandalous if this rumour is allowed to come to anything!

  • I hope people take this seriously. If the IOC is willing to drop wrestling from the Olympics which is one of the original events, they would consider anything. They are just looking for a TV friendly show. They'd rather add another beach volleyball or snowboard halfpipe.

  • Greetings fellow coaches and athletics lovers and especially those throws. Reading the news about the rumor remove hammer throw event makes me wonder what are the reasons for the argument valid? I think you have made a careful study of federations and regions worldwide to make such a rumor. We just analyze the growth of athletics in countries like Puerto Rico. A zone managers advocate for athletes who are developing at the event and will not close the room to stand in as elegant as that event. I make an appeal to all fellow athletes and coaches to join in favor of the non-elimination of this event if the rumor be true disposal. Here's a tireless worker and lover of athletics in general but even more of the throws.

  • It's referred to as the "Olympic Hammer". Politicians and bureaucrats at work, the folks that make the rules are never athletes. Funny how that works.

  • I trust nobody serious would even consider this idea. Hopefully it is just a bad rumour.
