I dont think there is a general answer to that question.
A "good" coach would need to be able to bring the best out of the training squad and each individual athlete
Agree to that.
A coach should focus on the athletes and try to bring them to the top.
Even if there are athletes among the training squad who are currently not the best, the coach should try to bring hem at least closer to their goals and potentials
I think a good coach also needs to be honest with his/her athletes.
I know from experience that this is really good.
If for example an athlete has certain goals but is not able to reach them, the coach should be clear about it.

But if the goals are not achieveable, and I believe that's what Florian is trying to say the coach should talk to the athletes and maybe stop them from wasting their time

Back then I was told by Jürgen Schult that I will not make it to the top discus throwers and so i decided to quit and went on travelling

I think if someone does throw for a certain time and especially under such a great coach it must be difficult

Correct, he bigger the squad the more likely it is that one does not get the proper attention.
See for example the training squad of Robert Harting. He is coached by Torsten Schmidt, who also coaches Robert's girlfriend Julia Fischer and Robert's younger brother Christoph.
He was leading the world with 67.93m until @jason dadz morgan snatched the WL with a massive 68m throw.
Yeah this training squad is amazing! There are not so many out who have such elite throwers within one single training group.
Would love to see Robert back in the game though...
