I'm not a coach but why would it be dangerous?
We used to swim during our general preparations with Jürgen #Schult.
So basically from September to November/December we swam couple of times a week. But maybe the coaches can share their thoughts about swimming as a training method?

I would say no. As an active rest day swimming is low impact on your joints. Besides with track and field we can get stuck training in one or two planes. With something different, like swimming, I think that gives yourself another chance to train your proprioception. Personally I'm not great at swimming- for me it's a low impact active rest day.

Swimming is a great exercise i always felt it was a great fun after training. The only time it's dangerous is when their are Sharks!!
-
Actually it could be harmful because swimming relaxes all muscles in the body. So when you do so mid-week or in other words don't rest the day after swimming your muscles will stay in that relaxed state and therefore training on them may have a sudden hard impact on them as they are still not ready for the level of intensity introduced.

i dunno what kind of swimming were talking here but I cant see how swimming relaxes the muscles and would leave them vulnerable. Anytime I get a good swim in Im still pretty tight the next day. But in a good way that is.

I'm not entirely sure if it relaxes the muscles. I only remember that I get kinda tired after swmming

I've read Tom Petranoff swam weekly during his javelin training.
I think it helps keep the shoulders supple. -
The online problem that i have found is that if im in the water too long my hand go too soft. not ideal for hammer throwing but, i do like to swim as it helps with my mobility.

We have no access to a pool, so no swimming of us. Although, we do a lot of contrast baths to help in recovery!

Why should swimming be dangerous? everything depends on the way, you do it. if its possible, i use swimming in the first weeks each year once or twice a week for basic endurance. it´s better then running all the time. the athletes are swimming in such a session between 1,2km and 1,5km. Later, when you are in your strength- or throwing training, you should use swimming more like bathing. Swim a bit for relaxing muscles.
in competition phase i don´t use swimming in my plans - because it makes muscles a bit tired and soft. the athlete too... -
