I like rings that are fairly fast but grippy. I've found no matter where I'm throwing if I can really feel the ring I can throw a lot better. When you get those very fast and slick rings I can't do a whole lot.
As for slow rings I've thrown in a lot so they don't affect me too much just don't like them a whole lot.
I used to like rings which are grippy as well. But they shouldn't be too slow since I was not the fastest. Therefore, I tried to use fast/slippery shoes

If the ring is completely flooded then yes it is you actually get more grip compared to when there is just a little bit of water the ring become really slick. I've been to a few meets where they've plugged the drains and used a hose to fill the ring. Once they flooded the ring it was so much easier to throw.
I like rings that have a bit more grip in the back but get faster through the middle to the front, helps me get a good start and get into good positions to accelerate through the front of the ring.
For me, I throw better in a slower ring. It allows me to use my momentum whereas in a fast ring I don't feel I have control, and I end up over rotating.
I really like fast rings, best hammer ring I have ever thrown on is in Hungary, Veszprem. Threw couple PBs over there. It is super fast! Highly recommend for hammer throwers.

I've heard some rumours that many elite Throwers use wet towels to create grip right before the throw.
But this is not allowed as far as I know.
And I'm quite surprised that the directors dis that.

Are you talking about wiping the ring or their shoes? At our home meets since we have a wood ring we keep a wet towel next to the ring to allow throwers to get some tack/grip on their shoes before they enter the ring.
Now if you are talking about a thrower taking a wet towel and wiping it on a dry ring I'm sure a lot of throwers would complain. Rings are best either when they are completely dry or filled with water. Any inbetween you will find throwers slipping a lot and faling.
In major championships those procedures such as puring water into a ring are not allowed, since some users might have a disadvantage by it.
Wiping such as cleaning shoes probably fine but not putting a lot of water into the circle.

That's so true!
But it also depends on the kind of shoe your'e wearing.
I used to have three different pairs of shoes.
One dry with a lot of grab, one real slippery and one with a lot of rills for heavy rain competitions
Regarding the interface of the throwing surface with the feet: in general, the ability to give on rotational force is good, and the ability to hold without slipping on lateral force is also desirable. Giving on rotational force allows rotational momentum to be preserved and less torsional stress on the knee. Holding on lateral force allows for greater generation of speed across the circle and more confidence without fear of slipping.
Depending on the event, some factors are more important than others. In general, hammer/weight throwers prefer the fastest circles and glide shot prefers a slower ring.
I prefer a fast ring for discus but only because my speed through the ring isn't great so I can get that extra bit out of it. Where as for shot, I like it a bit slower with it being a smaller circle I tend to over rotate on my turn, which I find easier than the glid.

Have you tried what Florian said above? Using faster shoes as well
This might even increase your speed then too

Got the 2013 saucony shoes, I find them quite quick but that just means I'm not quick enough, will need to look into what shoes people find quicker
Maybe we should start a thread about it and asking people to share their experience?!
that sounds a good idea
