Hi guys, I was having a discussion with a friend and he believed that you had to have in excess of a 200kg bench to be able to throw over 20 metres. I disagreed with this and I was wondering if any of you guys know of annoying that has had under a 200kg bench while being able to throw over 20 metres in the shot. Cheers.

@Tom Walsh could you share your max bench when you first cracked the 20 metre mark?
-
@James Joycey are you really going to hit 20 m this year? At an event in March perhaps?

Me? I think you may be mistaking me for someone else or you may be joking. Or maybe you're talking about throwing the 2k discus 20 metres. Should be able to get that comfortably
-
no I knew you were talking about shot as it was in your question! Really interested in the
answer. Wonder if physics is your answer? I was sort of asking the question in the Majeski standing throw question on how high the throw was. -
When Jacko Gill hit 20.01m in 2011 I believe his bench was under 200kg.

Vésteinn once told me there was someone who benched 110kg and threw 65+ in discus.
-
I found this calculator http://www.brianmac.co.uk/shot/. There is one for hammer and discus as well. Feed in height of release, angle and speed of release in m/s. Think this answers your question. Just have to find a way of calculating the speed of release. Interesting to see the formula

Do you know who that was?
Are you still in contact with the legend coach vesteinn? Could you get him here ? Would be awesome for some throwers to talk to him as well. -

I agree with @Rutger Smith . Personally, I achieved 20.06 with a 190kg bench press 1RM(with pad). I then went on to achieve 21.29m without increasing or similarly replicating the load stimulus of 190kg+ bench.
-
@Justin RODHE what was your 1RM bench when you were throwing 17m at Mt. Union?
@Rutger Smith do you do much benching? (or maybe @Tony Ciarelli could say?) -
@Sam Fillious My best 1RM bench press when I had 17m-18m result in 2007 was 315lbs(140kg). I was able to achieve 19.70m condition in 2009 without lifting more than this amount of weight in training.
-
When I threw for the first time over 20 meter (20.39m, Hengelo 2002) I had a bench of 165kg/365lbs.
When I hit my personal best of 21.62m (2006) I had a bench of 190kg/418lbs that year.
In december 2011 I pressed 200kg/440lbs. That is my bench pb. Last year (2013) I pressed 190. So not really impressive numbers.
Most impressive bench press I had is the speed I developed with 100kg/220lbs. I pressed over 1600Watts (1602 exactly). 120kg/264lbs around 1400Watts. 140kg/308lbs around 1200Watts.As I said above. A shot putter needs a certain 'base' strength for a 21-22 meter throw. I think for bench it is around 180-190kg. Key thing with that strength is the speed you develop in bench and other lifts.
In the end it is all about the speed of release in the throwing events. -
@Rutger Smith . This is great conversation on rate of force production. This is a key concept that I think while many people have an academic understanding, real world implementation often lacks, especially where harnessing this development in peak condition in concerned.
I have also done some testing in the past with 100kg bench press. I am sure the circumstances and mechanisms of our test were different, but for encyclopaedic interest, here they are:100kg Bench Press w/pad
3 repetition set in which the 2nd repetition produced the highest results.
Max Watts: 3902
Max Speed: 1.92m/s -
What about @Tom Walsh now since he went over 21m
What's your bench max? -
Tom Walsh only 195kg Bench so perhaps you don't need 200kg+ to throw 20m+ let only 21m+...
-
i think its more important how fast u move the weight not how much is on the bar. you do need base strength to be good at shot maybe 170kg and above. but i would say 85% of the people that throw over 20m would have 190kg bench press. but then it depends what type of thrower u are strength base or speed base as i am more towards speed so thats how i get away with it
i think i was bench 180kg maybe 185kg when i 1st threw 20m -
Benched 200kg in 1989 just scraped a 16m putt that year.
