Should We Change the Weight of the Shot Put? Discus? Hammer? Javelin?
-
-
I think it is a fantastic idea.
-
Great idea if all governing bodies follow the same laws, as UKA only now changing shot & hammer weights for younger athletes, i.e 3kg hammer for U17Girls.

Like in Olympic Lifting there should be a reset. But I would hope they wait until drug testing in foolproof, and that may be never. When they do it I hope they lower the weight. I would like to see the USA implements match the IAAF and European age group weights. Out high school girls throw way too heavy.

@Sandy Preto do you know if there are going to be changes anytime soon for the weights?
Or do you know why the US has their own weight system at all?! -
Who's to say that the top throwers now aren't on anything either....
-
No question U18 should be throwing lighter shot puts and U16 boys and girls lighter shots and discii. I'd like to see 'varsity' high school boys throwing 10 lb shot and 1.5 kg discii and girls 3 kg and .75 kg.

Think about it.
boys high school yearly leader: 70'-75'
girls high school yearly leader: 52'-54'How heavy would a ball have to been for a 70' high school boy to only throw 50'?
20 pounds, 25 pounds? Very heavy. That's the weight the girls feel every time they throw. No wonder so many quit.@Sandy Preto do you know if there are going to be changes anytime soon for the weights?

I do not think athletic coaches would buy all new implements.
I'm not sure of the history of the changes. -
In my part of Canada (New Brunswick) the high school weights are different than for American high schools. The "Varsity" (U18) boys are throwing a 5kg shot and a 1.5kg weight, and the "Varsity girls are throwing a 4kg shot and a 1kg discus. Both the "Junior Varsity" (U16) boys and girls throw a 4kg shot, and a 1kg discus. Although it has been petitioned that the governing body change the weights (ESPECIALLY the JV girls weights) they neither responded nor made any changes to the system.
Other provinces in Canada use different systems. I know that Nova Scotia (where I currently live) uses a 6kg shot and 1.75kg disc for Varsity boys, and 5kg shot and 1.5kg disc for Junior Varsity boys, while using a 4kg shot and 1kg disc for varsity girls and a 3kg shot and .75kg disc for Junior Varsity girls.

Shot, discus, hammer, javelin - that's a piece of cake! Change the weight throw PLEASE!!! That thing has more than nine kilos and is waaaay too heavy for us ladies (over 40)!

Naah the weight throw for masters is good fun, i wouldn't change those
we have one comp here run in Canberra each year 'Australian Masters Athletics Winter Throws' and there we even go heavier for a couple of unique events, the Super Heavyweight which are 56lb and 100lb respectively, not something to do each week but once a year is a bit of an experience
on the other impliments junior weights seem fine here in Australia, i dont think anyone is suggesting changes to Open impliments are they ?

I don't know about the US, but I think the IAAF weight standarts are good, for now.
