Quote from Brad Reid
I think this has been mentioned several times, likely by me come to think of it, but Lance Deal didn't start out as a hammer thrower. He was a very accomplished discus thrower.
What may have changed history was his performance at the 1984 NCAA Outdoor Championships when Lance threw the discus 61.62 meters, a distance that would have won the event many years. . . and placed 8th.
If being born left-handed isn't enough punishment for a discus thrower, throwing over 202 feet as a collegian and placing 8th will get you to thinking about career moves.
It would be the smartest move he'd ever make in sports, I guess.
Further proof, too, that almost all elite throwers show well in other throws. Not that all will attempt more than one event, but if they do throw something else, if they are elite in one event they'll likely excel somewhere else.
Who beat Lance that day and pushed him down to 8th?
Brenner, Fernholm, Buncic, Hafsteinsson, McDermott, Heisler and Weir.
I'd say they did him a great favor!

All,
Can i have your feelings on whether light punchbag work will improve arm speed for throwing?

What a lineup of talent at the '84 NCAAs! Like a "Who's Who" of discus throwing at the time. Amazing.
I believe Deal also threw the shot 60', am I correct? Great triple.
Would have liked to see what he could have done in his prime in the highland games with some serious training.published at Jun 29th 2011 9:27am on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

I want to thank all Ringers who have provided feedback on my new scoring methodology for the 2011 college throwing programs rankings. After further analysis, including several pairwise comparisons, I have concluded that, while the use of the logistic function greatly improves the methodology over that of past years, I do believe that the parameters I initially used do not sufficiently reward the top end of the performance distributions.
As a result, the rankings that I displayed for less than 24 hours at the beginning of the week no longer reflected a valid ranking of college throwing programs, in my opinion. Therefore, at the risk of angering another set of coaches, I have adjusted the parameters of the formula.
I have also posted an explanation of the methodology, including a graph of two of the logistic functions used, and other explanations. Feel free to read at the link below, then click through to view the revised rankings.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, and I welcome any additional feedback.

That's right. Soren Tallhem of Sweden has thrown
SP 20.91 out and 21.24 indoors,
56.76 DT,
66.14 HT, and
75.42 JT (new model).
Also 19.41 weight throw.
#2 would be Scott Russell of Canada, and
#3 would be either Mac Wilkins or Scott Warren, depending on how you adjust for Mac's throwing of the old javelin.
If you measure the athlete to the world record at the time that they were throwing, consider that Eric Lemming of Sweden has thrown over 84% of the then-WRs in the 4 events, and Mac Wilkins threw over 80% of all 4 events' then-WR.
On the women's side, it's Seilala Sua.

Quote from Brad Reid
I received an email from Mike Buncic and he recalled the super discus field that day at the NCAAs in 1984. It was one of those events, with giant throws and late moves, that must have kept everyone on edge until the very end.
No, at least as deep as I could go, Lance did not compete in the shot put at that national event. But, I do recall him having a nice shot put result. I guess my point would be that if he didn't throw 60' as a collegian, he likely would have had he specialized on it.
In the hammer event in 1984, at first I assumed Lance hadn't yet "morphed" into a hammer thrower, that otherwise he would have qualified for the 1984 NCAAs and been listed somewhere in the final rankings. Well, he DID compete but failed to qualify with a throw of 183-11, way down the list distance wise and place wise.
Now, Deal could have had an issue, or fouled off better throws, something like that. If not, it ought to give a lot encouragement to developing hammer throwers that if they have the potential, they can make a very big move.
Mike Buncic seemed to recall that Lance Deal had already expressed his interest and plans to convert to a hammer specialist.
It paid off big time.

Quote from Bill Green
Every discussion of this type on The Ring focuses on PR's set in the course of a career, often emphasizing athletes that have had very good performance in two events or who were world beaters in their primary discipline and did reasonably well in other events in an ancillary sense.
I believe that the title of Best All Around Thrower should be defined based upon performance in the competitive discipline established specifically to determine this: the Throwers Pentathalon.
Do we award medal to decathaletes and heptathaletes based upon average over the course of their career, or those that perform best all at once in a competitive format?
This Throwers Pentathalon record is still held by my training partner at UCLA, John Brenner. Per stitistics on The Throwers Page:
"John Brenner scored 5223 points (IAAF tables) in a weight pentathlon in early 80s: 20.96, 20.14, 57.66, 64.04, 67.52(~677). This is the highest scoring weight pentathlon that I am aware of"published at Jun 29th 2011 3:07pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/
