What may have changed history was his performance at the 1984 NCAA Outdoor Championships when Lance threw the discus 61.62 meters, a distance that would have won the event many years. . . and placed 8th.

If being born left-handed isn't enough punishment for a discus thrower, throwing over 202 feet as a collegian and placing 8th will get you to thinking about career moves.

It would be the smartest move he'd ever make in sports, I guess.

Further proof, too, that almost all elite throwers show well in other throws. Not that all will attempt more than one event, but if they do throw something else, if they are elite in one event they'll likely excel somewhere else.

Who beat Lance that day and pushed him down to 8th?

Brenner, Fernholm, Buncic, Hafsteinsson, McDermott, Heisler and Weir.

I'd say they did him a great favor!

If you measure the athlete to the world record at the time that they were throwing, consider that Eric Lemming of Sweden has thrown over 84% of the then-WRs in the 4 events, and Mac Wilkins threw over 80% of all 4 events' then-WR.

On the women's side, it's Seilala Sua.

No, at least as deep as I could go, Lance did not compete in the shot put at that national event. But, I do recall him having a nice shot put result. I guess my point would be that if he didn't throw 60' as a collegian, he likely would have had he specialized on it.

In the hammer event in 1984, at first I assumed Lance hadn't yet "morphed" into a hammer thrower, that otherwise he would have qualified for the 1984 NCAAs and been listed somewhere in the final rankings. Well, he DID compete but failed to qualify with a throw of 183-11, way down the list distance wise and place wise.

Now, Deal could have had an issue, or fouled off better throws, something like that. If not, it ought to give a lot encouragement to developing hammer throwers that if they have the potential, they can make a very big move.

Mike Buncic seemed to recall that Lance Deal had already expressed his interest and plans to convert to a hammer specialist.

It paid off big time.

Do we award medal to decathaletes and heptathaletes based upon average over the course of their career, or those that perform best all at once in a competitive format?

This Throwers Pentathalon record is still held by my training partner at UCLA, John Brenner. Per stitistics on The Throwers Page:

"John Brenner scored 5223 points (IAAF tables) in a weight pentathlon in early 80s: 20.96, 20.14, 57.66, 64.04, 67.52(~677). This is the highest scoring weight pentathlon that I am aware of"
