Snow outside in New York!! but we still continue to train. Tips for guys in cold areas!!
(1)Plastic bags over your feet inside your shoes keep you socks dry.
(2)A kid had work overboots $10-15 put them on when she went out to collect kept a lot of ice off her shoes.
(3)Got a tarp to cover circle nailed it into the ground at the corners. Lifted the snow off easy & circle was fine just put a bit of rock salt at end of session then sweep it off the next time.
(4)when throwing table salt is better for grip than rock salt just feels like sand in the circle.
(5)I was always against throwing into a net but if your outside the net speeds up the session at the end put it down for a few real throws
(6) Dig a trench out to 60-75m makes it easier to go back and forth. A thrower used a snowblower and had a whole road system etc
(7)Use as many hammers as possible as it speeds up the session. I usually have a few kids throw 4-5 hammers in a round 6 rounds 30ish throws done.
(8)Put bright long 2-3 feet tape on the handle as it will make it easier to find in deep snow.
(9) Warm drinks(Tea/Coffee/Irish wine) to feel warm!!
(10)WD-40
(11)Underarmor
(12)Place newspaper in your shoes after throwing will help dry.
(13) Polanik Hammers Rule!!
(14) Throwing outside in the cold is hard but it can be fun. It teaches i feel my kids that any other meet condition is easy compared to throwing in 0 degrees. OK guys now Post some pics on the ring of winter training outside.Have a great day!!published at Jan 19th 2011 2:01am on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Hello everyone. Entries are due for this years Rock and Roll Throw Off.
Come and be a part of one of the most exciting throws meets around.
The 3rd Annual Rock 'N' Roll Throw Off will take place Saturday January 22nd at Lancaster Field House, just outside of Buffalo, New York. This is a throws only meet featuring men and women of high school, colligiate, open, and masters competition in the shot put and weight throw.
Lancaster provides a state of the art field house as well as an NCAA official cage. An advanced sound system creates a LOUD atmosphere to create energy ...and DEEP throws, much like the Milrose Games.
Past years event brought 2004 and 2008 Olympian AG Kruger, Thomas Jacob Freeman, and #5 in the US, shot putter Sheldon Battle along with Bryan Vickers of Ashland Elite. Many high school, open, and masters athletes across Western New York competed as well as across the state and north east.
This meet is USATF certified and features USATF officials. All marks are deemed eligible by high school standards as well as IAAF sanctioned.
The meet will start at 2pm and lead into an elite competion.
Entries are DUE now, $10 for Open and Masters, free for all high school competition.

Quote from John Mastersthrower
at 43, I have my first significant injury, a partial patellar tendon tear. Did it at first meet of the season, and suspect that I wont be 100% until Outdoor. How have you dealt with injury in your career? Thos of you that don't throw anymore, did an injury contribute to your decision to retire? If you continued your career, did you find your injury limited your potential, or did you achieve pre-injury levels of performance
Ruminating on how I should deal with throwing, going forward. As of yesterday, a 70 yr old woman was doing twice the RPM on the bike than I could..clearly another exercise in humility
Thanks

John,
On June 12th I severly injured my right (throwing) shoulder in a Wing Chun Tournament. I was 50 years old at the time and questioned whether or not I had "really done it this time". I had blew my chance to compete at Masters Nationals and wondered if Worlds was out of the question too. John, I had NO surgery...rehabed it myself...TRX trainer, youtube.com shoulder exercises, ice, massage and patience.
End result...I'm throwing the shot the best I have in 5 years! No, I'm not the "presser" I used to be, but maybe a better thrower than I was lately. I've accepted the fact that I wont ever throw like I used too, but my gosh that was over 20 years ago. I'm having a blast...throwing is fun!
