The number of kids participating isn't the issue...the #1 high school sport as far as participation goes in the USA is Track and Field. The problem is the number of kids taking it seriously vs. the number of kids who treat it as an off-season work-out for another sport.
Another thing, when was the last time we were "beaten" in T&F by another country? Maybe Jamaica has us in the sprints lately, and Germany the throws, and Estonia has had ONE medal winner lately...but look at our medal counts at the past two major championships. 08' Olympics we got 7 Golds and 23 medals total, both figures more than any other country. In Berlin it was 10 gold medals and 22 total medals, again more than any other country. Overall, we are still the world's number 1 track and field nation.
Now, god only knows what we'd be capable of if track was more popular, well run and attracted more talent...published at Feb 16th 2010 12:47am on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Gold is overrated, and would deform on landing. How about an osmium hammer?

Throw 1 Deep makes another mark in high school throwing. Davis Fraker throws the 35# ball 20.02m. Mike Judge's pupil hit 19.99m as well.

Anyone interested in purchasing a 16 Lb. Nishi hammer. Used in less than 10 competitions last year. I think I have at least 5 or 6 Nishi wires as well. Original price is over $650. Willing to give it up for $400 OBO.

Where did you get this statistic? I was under the impression that it was baseball, followed by basketball

I just remember hearing/reading it from a bunch of different places. After looking up some numbers it looks like it's gone back and forth between basketball and T&F the past few years. Keep in mind I'm talking about boys and girls combined so that would leave out sports like baseball.

Newport is a battle zone every year. We have a top ranked swimming program (multiple Olympians) The water polo team's looks like the Russian teams(multiple Olympians). They are the biggest guys and girls on campus, much bigger than our football team. The boy's and girls volleyball team's are yearly ranked in the top in the Nation(multiple Olympians) Club is what kills us on the girls side not the school programs. They all play club volleyball and water polo so their weekends are taken and they have practice year round so no track. Baseball is not great at our school but it's baseball everyone thinks their good as 9th graders. At the start of every year it is a war to get athletes out. I've got twenty throwers, all boys, but when the girls water polo and volleyball teams walk by there are a ton I wish I had.

Quote from Coach Mac
A couple of quick thoughts.
1) Cut some 2 x 4's about a foot long and pound 2-nails in it to hold the hammer handle in the middle. Very hard to DRAG this has the thrower hold the ends of the 2 x 4 which are roughly shouler -width apart.
2) Making the hammer longer by adding master-links...creates a FEELING of patience in the turns. (note: if you have a local Harbor Freight they carry them)
3) Dont be afraid to put a little sand down on your drill pad surface too encourage turning.
Good luck ! mac~published at Feb 16th 2010 5:12pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Quote from Coach Mac
When Arroyo Grande was coming in every year large and in charge the coach told me how he did it. He had the senoirs recruiting for him at the Jr -high level. He would put on a throws demo/clinic then go after the star athletes.
This produced a group one year where rhe "3rd-thrower"threw shot 64' 6"....lol

hello,
this weekend at the boston university valentine invitational, i foolishly forgot to pick up my weight from the cage after the competition was over. about an hour later when i went back to get it, it was not there. after speaking to some other throwers, they said that it was there after everyone left but they didnt see who picked it up. if anyone was there and picked it up on purpose or by mistake, thank you because that means it is not gone forever. it is an orange bag with 'SFC' written on it. the ball is black and the handle is a 'thin' black handle and there is no gaurd or rubber around the swivel. it belongs to St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY. you can contact me via my email here if you were there and/or know anything about it. thanks for any help.published at Feb 16th 2010 7:39pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

be careful guys in case you prejudice this case somehow, I know each legal system has it's own quirks about commenting on the possible outcome of criminal trial.
It may be totally permissible but it is something to be cautious about.
certainly a tragic tragic case.published at Feb 16th 2010 8:40pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Quote from bingisser
Normally in the U.S., only those involved with the case (e.g. judges, lawyers, jury members, etc.) can be prohibited from commenting on a pending case for fear of prejudicing the outcome.
Members of the general public can still exercise the first amendment right to freedom of speech and comment on the case (as the newspapers freely do) so long as the comments aren't slanderous or libelous.

good to know above, as each criminal jurisdiction may have it's own unique rules.

Quote from Coach B
I've used the 2X4 aide before, and have had much success with using it. I like the second part of the drill though. I've always thrown water onto the hammer circle outside, but I'm wondering if putting sand on the surface indoors for the weight would accomplish the same purpose.
