Who would've thought? I've also read that the Europeans are always much better prepared in inclement conditions, even snow and subfreezing temperatures. I know all three US throwers have had big marks in the rain, but maybe that and being on the other side of the world (more so than anyone else, timezone-wise) made a difference.

It's hard to appreciate how difficult the conditions can be 1/2 around the world. John Smith's posts about dropping a meter to the Europeans come to mind...

Dan John talking yesterday about being crushed on 183 NCAA throw back in the day that didn't even make finals.

Really exciting for Dylan Armstrong to break Canadian national record (remember this is a converted hammer thrower), but then to miss the medal stand by a stinking 1 cm!!! That hurt nearly as much as Lance Deal nearly missing gold in Atlanta with his last round throw, but Lance walked away with a medal. Sure a national record and PR at the Olympics final, but then not get the prize....ouch...that is tough.

I suspect Majewski and Miknevich are training with more focus on the games while Nelson, Hoffa and Cantwell are throwing 70-73' feb-july in order to make a good living. Then they go to the olympics and we see what happens.

A few weeks ago, Miknevich was throwing 72' at meets in his home country while Nelson, Hoffa and Cantwell were globe-trotting throwing 66'.

It reminds of the current situation in international basketball. The US has far and away the best players but they're more concerned with the NBA. season than the olympics

Taking nothing away from Miknevich and Majewski, but I think this result is more complicated than a "spin vs glide" discussion or Americans "choking" at the games.
