Valencia, Spain - Victory celebrations vary from athlete to athlete. Some go positively ballistic and become oblivious to their surroundings. Once Christian Cantwell had locked up the shot put gold medal in Valencia, he walked over to the officials and volunteers who had worked the event and shook each one of them by the hand.

Then came the customary photo op during which he and fellow American Reese Hoffa posed with the Stars and Stripes held aloft. But it was a track side interview broadcast over the public address system which caught the attention of those occupying seats in the press tribune.

He attended IU and then transfered to Auburn after his freshman season. Randy heisler recruited him but then left in december. Auburn had been high on his list the first go around so, we looked into whether they were still an option and they were. Eric is throwing, he is at Notre Dame at a last chance meet this week. He has thrown 18.52 this year. He is ranked 12th in the country, but he is hoping for a bigger throw tomorrow.

  • Quote from Peter Lonsdale

At the recent nationals it was easy to feel like a bit of an outsider given my age and my current level of throwing. It helped a lot in this regard to hear your encouragement and good humour, especially before throws and after I missed the top 8, so thanks sincerely for this. It was good to be in a comp with people supporting each other and egging each other on for bigger throws, even those who were not even close to being competitive (this time!!!!!)

All the best to you all, good luck Benn in the battle to get to Beijing, and I hope to see you all again next year.

One of the greatest things to have whether it's applying for a job, performing mundane tasks, or being a pro athlete is experience. I'm not a critic of Cantwell but I am a little skeptical of how he will respond under major pressure. And by major pressure I mean the Olympic Trials (and hopefully the Olympics) which are more pressure packed than the Indoor World Champs during an Olympic year. He did this once before and it didn't turn out too well for him in the end. But, he was very young then and now he has a lot of experience under his belt so we'll see how things pan out. Whether it's to others or to himself I think he still has something to prove. I know I would if I were him. This win is just one more stripe on his shoulder of hopefully many more to come.

I cynically opened the newspaper this morning to note how far back in the Sports section the story of Cantwell/Hoffa would be buried. Would it be last page?...next to last?..and with all the front pages dedicates to high school basketball and baseball's spring training (not that there's anything wrong with either of those).

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that there wasn't even the tiniest mention of their achievements anywhere to be found. Nada!

what happened to Jake Freeman at Indoor Nationals that caused him to pass his remaining 4 throws after fouling his second? When will he be training/competing again?

Also, a little bit of encouragement goes out to Bethany Hart, not specifically mentioned in earlier posts about womens HT- so I encourage you, Bethany- throw far!
