I have an athlete who is strong as hell, but drags the #35 weight so badly that sometimes he falls down and sends the ball 45

Any suggestions for helping an athlete with this problem? Pirouettes out of the back and still goes 145.
Thanks.

I read that too on the IAAF web site (Click on the Hoffa story), it says he moved to Georgia to train with Don Babbit...exciting news if it's true!

For whatever it's worth, I once heard a golf pro say that the best way to get someone to quit slicing was to teach them how to hit a hook.
Maybe have your athlete practice undererotating?published at Jan 23rd 2008 3:47am on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Mike Allerman of Scotch Plains NJ threw 65-6 at the Jersey City Armory later was found that he threw a 10 lbs shot put. His coach and Mike are saying that he did not know that it was 10 lbs...should we be so sure that he has not done this before

sounds legit. considering he and his coach were the ones who corrected the error. and two pounds wont seem like much when its in a 12lb shell.
we throw with the 10s outdoors quite a bit and if it werent for the goofy bolt on the side and the big '10' i carved into them it would be fairly easy to mix em up.published at Jan 23rd 2008 11:36am on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

65-6 is still a couple feet off the NJ state record anyway so its not that big of a deal...

21.06 is a nice opener. However, 0.25m behind his season opener over the previous two years. His average opener over the previous four years is 20.86. His average improvement from first mark to best mark is .80m. 21.66m would be a nice seasonal mark. Especiall nice at world considering the average winning throw over the last 11 years is 21.39m. Being an olympic year and considering Reese's knack for performing big at the big meets, this should be interesting.

Quote from Coach Mac
In order of severity:
1) We had a rowing- handle (wt-room) that we could hook the wt too for drills. A 2 x 4 (shoulder width)with 2-nails will help for the hammer as long as the handle fits over the 2 x 4 and nails.
2) Two ball drill (heavier the better--- 20-lb'rs ?) out to the side and we call it the Lance Deal drill as I have him on tape doing 50-+ turns in a ROW in this fashion:
Walk with the balls to get them moving and the TRIGGER is stepping too 180--degree's ( or 12 o'clock) and you do a normal heel toe turn with the left foot (presuming rt-handed) and a TOE turn with the RIGHT FOOT. Great centering drill. If you DON'T POOSH the ball with the rt-side you won't turn. Be PATIENT and sit into the toe turn...try to get at least 5-6 turns and aim for 10-
3rd-level---2- 35-lb wts. Hold them on the hip line ( not out too side OR directly in front) but about front pocket on jeans. Walk into the drill and SIT and POOSH. Gotta hold posturrre and use the balls to turn.
4-th Level = get your power clean up to 450-lbs. and dead lift 8-bills...grin and repeat after me. My name is _ _ _ _ and I am a DRAG QUEEN ( 1rst step in the 12-step recovery program )
Good luck and THROW FAR !
mac~
p.s. A couple of out of the box drills.
Getting the upper body out of the equation. HEAVY Sweat shirt and tie the sleeves to the hammer handle (no arms) and turn.
Even less upper body ( go light) Tie a Face cloth (small towel) use a 4-k---3-k---2-k hammer and hold the towel (hammer) in your teeth. You will NOT drop your head (grin) and hopefully you "own" all your own teeth...grin GREAT feedback for the brain.published at Jan 23rd 2008 1:28pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

I really like jayess's idea.
Also, a little more bend with the legs.
Move focal point to mid sector or right sector line (this goes hand-n-hand with jayess).
Slow down out of the back.
Think "Big Circle". Keep knees apart coming out of the back.
This can be practiced for many reps with no implement going half speed in garage or wherever. I'd suggest doing a bunch of reps without the implement.
I've been coaching discus throwers with traffic cones on a basketball court all winter. I'm very encouraged so far. They're not distracted by 'how far am I throwing?'published at Jan 23rd 2008 2:08pm on http://www.effortlessthrow.org/

Tomsonite 65-6 close to the record or not it was still 2 pounds off. Why would he even bring them to the meet then?
