There has been a lot of talk on throwing light and heavy implements on developing specific strength and specific speed - I know they do that but not really how or why or what the other benefits may be, can some of the experienced coaches on here weigh in on that? And if you have any of that info as it pertains to the hammer, that would be helpful to me as well.

Also out of curiosity, is there any such thing as light/heavy javelin throwing or do jav throwers not bother with that stuff?

Thanks for the info. I have been working with my throwers the last few years on setting up our training similar to the "Westside Barbell", conjugate approach. This method has worked extremely well for myself and my throwers in the weight room, so I have slowly brought this approach to the throwing ring. It has been working well in the shot / weight, but I have been struggling to implement the same principles for the disc / hammer. I still utilize heavy and light implements in the hammer but only using full competition type throws.

Without going into too much detail (I am working on an article on this topic) I use a maximum effort day (SP/WT), where we through an overweight implement using "special exercises" similar to our competition throw, but not a full technique throw, and then a dynamic effort day where we throw an underweight implement using full competition throw. I assume you have some experience with this type of training from reading some of your articles, if so can you offer any input?
