Just interested in what you guys think in regards to box squats and full squats for a thrower.

James,
not qualified to answer that question.just interested what age did you start on weights?
Also do you ever reach a stage where your technique is at a state that the only real improvement in PB you can get is by getting stronger?
Have you watched 'Throws Unlimited' yet. I reckon one of the guests Dane Miller could best answer that question.Maybe do what Jacko does -

Sam, I am only 14 and I've been doing weights for 6 months or so, so can't really answer your question. I have seen some of the throws unlimited stuff but not of Dane Miller.

After working for a long time as a Strength Coach, I believe that all the different forms of squatting have a potential use. We use all the same musculature and structures, but with different function and emphasis. From the angle of genetically encoded movements (those which are part of normal motor development), squatting deeply can be good for the body. I think that most folks focus too much on weight and weight lifted rather than quality of the lift itself and overall improvements in the below qualities:
1. strength
2. stability
3. postural control
4. balance
5. acceleration
6. deceleration
7.mobilityI have used all sorts of squats in my training throughout the years and they all have different positive and negative effects on my body. I can say that a 800lb wide stance box squat @ 18" height, requires a different set of skill and strength than a 300kg deep squat, or a 230k front squat.
I do feel that athletes should learn a variety of movements over the duration of a career.
Discus Dynamics - Home -
There is ample evidence that full range of motion squats increases power development, as much or more so than short range squats. We train ass to grass for numerous reasons, the main one being it has minimal negative impact on technical training of the throws. We use light quarter squats to peak certain types of throwers. I like box squats for strength but not for throwing.

@Dane M. Miller Do you think your answer applies to all four throwing events?
I know that hamemr throwers in Germany to ass to grass as well. But most of the discus throwers do more half squats than full ones. -
I think it's beneficial for discus throwers to do full range and half range. The biggest focus still has to be on throwing and technical improvement.
-
That's and interesting topic.
Thanks to @Jason Young and @Dane M. Miller for sharing your great experience! -
Which is better?
