  • I liked first place in college - and 84% or so. Now that I'm a coach I prefer Gill for whatever reason (release seems a little easier. Maybe a 'sharper' edge) and they're generally in the high 70's to low 80s. Last year I had a thrower get 7th in the state and I had him with a 90-92% rim weight disc

  • Nelco gold (87%) and Olympia (80%). Denfi is excellent discus but its not for rainy days or when the grass is wet) there seems to be a cap between the rim and the plates. So when you throw, water flushes to your fingers at the release, point ruining the throw...like a centrifuge.. Someone else noticed this? Model Ultimate Spin.
I noticed this on nationals and later my brother bought one and he cant throw it when theres water on the field.

  • Thought I would share my personal collection of discs that I have.

Starting at the top and going clockwise:

    • Denfi Classis(no longer made) awesome rim similar to an Orange flyer but has that rough Denfi plates.
    • Pacer Gold. Older model in perfect condition probably my #2 right now.
    • Nelco Odyssey
    • Nelco Super Spin
    • Nelco Gold

I bought the Nelco cheap and they are solid training discs and comp as well. Was using these as my comp discs until I got my hands on the Denfi and Pacer.

  • The Cantabrian discus was the weapon of choice in the 1990s.

I got ahold of a worker in the manufacturing factory in England and she sent me two dozen Cantabrian's at a wholesale price. We got a few of each -- blue, red, black and white. Yo many Olympians, they were the best implement out there. England based

The word was Cantabrian went out of business, sold the name but no one would buy the manufacturing equipment (dyes, presses... etc.) so the new implement were not the same as the old ones and they went out of style.

Today we love the Denfi. We've not bought the Space Traveler but use Denfi's Sky Masters and yellow Competition discii.

Last month I had a girl PB by 11' in the rain with a Denfi Competition discus. We've not had a moisture issue with Sky Masters either.

  • Wow thats interesting that alot of people like the UCS Orange Flyer. I bought one and it was super slippery and I never seemed to be able to get a good grip on it. The plate material seemed odd. Also, the discus they sold me was too small for competition meets. it got impounded at every meet I took it too. Im not sure why I never complained about that to UCS. oh well. My favorite discus would probably be the Pacer Orange Godina series. The plates seem like plastic, but they are really sticky. The edge is also one of the sharpest I have seen on a discus. that discus was magical, man. close second would probably be my original denfi that they dont make anymore. I bought the new yellow denfi discus, i will see how it compares to the old one and report back.

  • You won't believe me but it is her back up discus that she was forced to throw at USAs when her primary discus (Cantabrian gold) cracked. Threw it 65.96. She got a replacement Cantabrian and has been throwing both the cantabrian and her back up... Stackhouse Olympia with light blue plates. 83% rim weight for about $100 retail... I wondered if anyone would notice.

Gia was at one of Mac's meets with SBT back in 2009 or 2010 and the guy from Stackhouse was there and gave her that discus. She always had a good feel for that model. When I talked to Gia after the meet and we discussed use of the Olympia, She told me that it felt heavy in her hand and that she felt more patient in her delivery with it. I do believe you are correct that 67.59 is likely the furthest that model has ever flown.

  • To the people at Denfi……please offer custom plates every year or two for one or two of your discs. I would pay a lot to get some clear plates for my ultimate spin. Its just such a cool look. Hey, even if you could produce 50-100 sets of plates a year that were cool colours and double or triple the price people would buy the plates.

Here is a quote right from the Denfi site on 'unique' Denfi's

    Quote from Denfi Sport

Durring the start up when we fabricate the side plates the molding machines it makes some unique colored side plates, i know that throwers would like to have their own one of a kind discus, the samples is valid for any use in competition and they carry the IAAF cert.
From Time 2 time we will offer them here in our web-shop

So that means the only time they'll get these unique plates is when they make new plates. This obviously doesn't happen that often because of how many they most likely make a year. Your best bet is to check the Denfi site often and hope they have one.

  • I have checked off and on for years and its VERY rare. I am just saying that if in 2015 they ran a batch of clear ultimate spin plates, a few hundred. Double the price and they will sell. Then for 2016 do bright green sky master plates. Then for 2017 do yellow space traveler plates. Then in 2018 do another version. If it was once a year a batch of 200 sets of plates are available in unique colours and then not for that style of disc again for 3 years they would sell out in days. Just a thought.
