Sergey Makarov in the 2003 World Championships 85.44 meters (WINNING THROW)

Makarov's personal best of 92.61 metres was achieved in 2002 in Sheffield. Facing tough competition from Jan Železný, Steve Backley and others, Makarov did not win any major competition until 2003, when he became world champion at the age of 30. He clinched the men's javelin title with his very first throw at the World Championships in Paris.
The 30-year-old surged in to the lead in the first round with a throw of 85.44m and his mark could not be bettered.
