The women’s shot put final has just finished. As stated earlier the fight for the medals was between the trio of Schwanitz, Gong and Carter. In the end, Schwanitz took the gold medal with her 3rd round toss of 20.37m. Lijiao Gong placed second with her 1st round toss of 20.30m and the American Michelle Carter takes the bronze medal with 19.76m.
That the fight for the medals was only between the trio of Schwanitz, Gong and Carter was quite clear. Right from the start of the competition one could see that no one else would be able to get close to any of the medals. The strong Chinese Lijiao Gong opened with a monster toss of 20.30m and surprised Schwanitz and Carter a bit. Schwanitz tossed the 4kg ball to 19.80m which was enough for the 2nd place but way behind Gong. The American Carter openend with 19.45m putting a gap of almost 1 1/2 meter between the 3rd and 4th place.
During the second round, Schwanitz and Carter both improved their first round efforts. Carter was getting close to the 20m mark with her throw of 19.76m and Schwanitz threw the 4kg ball to exactly 20.00m. Gong was not affected by this and tossed another strong 20.05m throw. Behind the trio it was not really important what was going on because none of the other throwers were able to get even close to the podium.
Schwanitz talked to her coach about what kind of technical issues she had during the first two attempts. It seemed the advice by Coach Sven Lang helped her. She bettered her result during the 3rd round to 20.37m. This massive throw was also the new leading throw of the competition. Gong tried to have an answer ready but her 3rd round toss of 20.25m was short a few centimeters. Carter was not able to improve during the 3rd round either.
Finally, during the 4th round two more throwers were able to break the 19m barrier. The Chinese Yang Gao tossed the 4kg ball to 19.04m and Anita Marton from Hungary threw a new national record of 19.48m to take the 4th place. During the remaining threw throws no positions were changed anymore. Christina Schwanitz tossed another big one in round five, measured 20.10m and Gong fouled her 4th and 5th attempt. After the last round it was clear, the German shot put star Christina Schwanitz won the gold medal with her great toss of 20.37m.
