How has your training been going recently?
Recently, my training has been going extremely well. I’m excited for the competitions ahead.
What is the focus of your training schedule?
My training schedule is mainly focused on timing and physical preparation of the meets… just like everyone else.
Since you qualified for the World Championships in the shot put; where does the hammer fit into your plans?
If my agent gets me a hammer meet, then I will be throwing the hammer. Though I haven’t trained [with the hammer] in weeks. I plan to pick it up again during my stay at the training camp in Japan.
Is there anything new you are implementing into your training?
Between Pan Ams and NACACs I have added more 4k throws in practice. Along with plenty of throws with lighter balls for timing my speed.
What technical issues are you working on?
As far as the technical aspect of my throwing, Coach Smith and I have decided to go with a different set-up when training and competing with the spin. I tilt my shoulders at the start of the move now, which cleans up me having to dive in the middle to get in a glider’s position at the front of the ring. Tilting is something I used to do a few years ago, but had to abandon when I tore a muscle in my abdomen at the start of 2013.
Where are you currently training?
Carbondale, Illinois is my training site. But, I plan to make the move down to Ole Miss [Oxford, Mississippi] with Coach Connie and Coach Smith in October.
Will you be attending any training camps at another site?
Between to transition from one state to the other, I will be training at the Japanese training facility with the USA team preparing for World’s. And then, back at Carbondale until my apartment in Oxford is open for me to move in.
Who is your current coach?
John Smith is (and always will be) my coach.
Are you training with your coach on site or long distance?
When Coach Smith makes the move down to Mississippi, we will have to endure long distance training communications until the time we reunite in October.
Are you currently working a job? If so, what and how many hours a week?
Track and field is my only job because I need to devote my full attention to learning the craft. Also, unlike most, I train in two elite level throwing events.
What competitions do you have planned?
The competitions that I know of are NACACs and WORLDs. Both take place in August in this year.
What is your Asian travel schedule?
I will be traveling to Japan on the 9th and to Beijing on the 18th. Coach Smith will be in Japan as well.
Will any friends or family be traveling to Beijing?
My friends and family–TEAM USA–will be with me.
