Throwholics already wrote about the incredible monster toss by Konrad Bukowiecki, who just set a new national and championships record of 22.62m. We just had a talk with Konrad and will provide you with the outcome. Enjoy
Q: Congratulations on your success and the new championship record. We talked about David Storl’s European record couple of times already. Are you sad you did not achieve that today?
Konrad: I think I could have broken these records today, but the weather conditions were not good with all the rain. So I’m happy with the 22.62m.
Q: Do you think you will break the European record and World record this year? Or will you move that goal to next year?
Konrad: I do not think that I will be able to break either of the records this year. Now I have to prepare for the world championships in Beijing, China. Focusing on the senior shot (7.26kg) is my main goal now.
Q: You are now focusing on the senior shot for Beijing, China. What goals do you have in mind for the World championships?
Konrad: First of all, it is not clear yet if I will go at all. I do not know if my association will nominate me. But if I will be going to Beijing and if I will be able to beat my personal best I will be very happy. My goal then would be to make the final of the top 12 throwers.
Q: You are currently 3rd in Poland and have achieved the qualification standard. Why would your federation not send you?
Konrad: Yes, but they wanted me to throw over 20.45m twice between 9th of May and end of July. If I will get nominated to compete I can guarantee that I will be in good shape for sure.
Q: You said you have to proof that you can throw over 20.45m until end of july. Do you have some competitions lined up?
Konrad: Yes, National champs and one meeting in Warsaw
Q: If you can make the team, and Throwholics thinks you will do so, what kind of goals do you have in mind?
Konrad: I prepared with the junior shot (6kg) only to be good at the European Championships. And I do not feel good with the 7.26kg right now because I do not even throw with 7.26kg at the moment.
Q: You said during an interview with the European Athletics that you are slower with the 7.26kg shot than with the 6kg. Is that because the shot is still to heavy? Do you need to improve on your strengths level?
Konrad: I think it will depend on my training. I need to do a lot of throws with the 7.26kg shot to get comfortable with. The world championships are not up for over a month now, so I have enough time to get faster and be able to throw further.
Q: Are you planning on doing some competitions after the world championships in Beijing?
Konrad: I have no idea at all. It will depend on my shape. But I think I will have to rest and relax after the season. In my mind there are only two things for 2016. First, I want to go to the Olympic Games in Rio. Second, I want to defend my world junior championships title with a new world record which is currently held by Jacko Gill with 23.00m exactly.
Thank you for your time and Throwholics wishes obviously good luck for Beijing. We are sure your federation should nominate you!
