The Stockholm IAAF Diamond League meeting has started yesterday with the women’s shot put event. Now the men’s discus event has just finished with the Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski on top of the podium with a new season best of 65.98m. Philip Milanov placed 2nd with 64.97m and Robert Urbanek 3rd with 63.25m.
The competition started slow with results below 63m. The best thrower of the first round was the Polish thrower Robert Urbanek. He threw the 2kg implement to 62.42m to lead the strong field throwers. Daniel Stahl from Sweden produced the 2nd best result of the first round. His effort of 61.25m put him in the 2nd place. Philip Milanov, who won the last Diamond League meeting placed 3rd with 59.59m.
There was improvement by all the throwers needed in order to get some good results. So did Philip Milanov, in his 2nd attempt. He improved to 63.10m and was leading for a short time until the Pole Robert Urbanek answered with 63.18m, surpassing Philip only by 8 centimeters. Piotr Malachowski who started the competition with only 56m improved in the 2nd round as well. His throw of 61.46m puts him in the 3rd place as soon as the 2nd round finished.
During the 3rd round, Piotr Malachowski, Philip Milanov, Axel Härstedt, Daniel Stahl, Benn Harradine and Zoltan Kovago all fouled their attempts. Only Robert Urbanek presented another 62m throw. In the fourth round Philip Milanov took back the lead with solid 64.50m throw. Urbanek then improved again, but not enough. His 4th round was measured 63.25m, still enough for the 3nd place. Piotr Malachowski surpassed Urbanek by only one centimer throwing 63.26m.
During the 5th Axel Härstedt improved from his 2nd attempt of 61m to 63.24m, being only 1 centimer shy of the podium. Benn Harradine improved his result to a days best of 62.98m to place 7th in the competition. Daniel Stahl improved during the final attempt to 63.03m which was enough for the 5th place. Axel Härstedt and Robert Urbanek did not improve anymore in the final round. In the end, it was the fight between Piotr Malachowski and Philip Milanov. Milanov still leading before going to the final attempt was curious about Malachowski. Piotr then underlined his gold ambitions for the world championships with a new season best of 65.95m. Philip Milanov was not able to respond and take back the lead, even though he also improved in his last attempt which was measured 64.97m.
Piotr Malachowsi has now 17 points in the Diamond Race, followed by his compatriot Robert Urbanek (11 points) and Philip Milanov (6 points).
The weather was very bad for me, the circle was very slippery so I am very happy with the result. Training is been going very well, I have been throwing over two meters further so I hope to get the gold medal in Beijing but this is sport, you never know – you sometimes lose.
I was really close to 65m, it was ok – my goal was to throw 66m today and reach the Olympic qualifying standard for next year. The rain just before the competition did not disturb me at all, lately I have performance well in rain so I am happy for that. I am hoping for rainy conditions in Beijing, China.
