Today the GWANGJU UNIVERSIADE started and three throwing events were already taking place. Usually there is a qualification round prior the final, unless there are not enough competitors. This is what happened at the men’s shot put event. The Indian shot putter Inderjeet Singh moved the 7.26kg ball 20.27m for the gold medal. Sami Peltomaeki was the best in the mens javelin event with 77.63m and Subenrat Insaeng is leading the women discus event after the qualificaiton round with 56.77m.
Finally the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju has started. The first final was already scheduled at todays first athletic events. The men’s shot put was won by Inderjeet Singh with 20.27m. Singh was until his very last attempt only 3rd with 19.80m but then snatched the gold medal with his massive toss. Andrei Marius Gag placed second and grabbed the silver medal with 19.92m. Alexander Bulanov from Russia tossed the 7.26kg ball 19.84m to take the bronze medal home.
Two more throwing events were taking place today. Both of them had enough thrower to schedule an qualificaiton round upfront. In order to get into the men’s javelin final the throwers would need 76m as an automatic qualifier or at least the 12 best performances would be taken into account. The best javelin thrower of the qualification was Sami Markus Peltomaeki with 77.63m. Next to him also Shih–Feng Huang 76.96m and Tanel Laanmae 76.10m were the only ones who made the automatic qualificaiton. 9 more throwers were added to the start list of the final, everyone above 72.83m made the final of the top 12 throwers.
The women discus event was scheduled for todays athletic events as well. The automatic qualifier for the final was 55m and would be filled up until the top 12 throwers were found. Same as for the men’s javelin event only three throwers made the automatic qualifier. Subenrat Insaeng is leading with 56.77m, followed by Marike Steinacker 55.45m and Yulia Maltseva 55.02m. In order to make the final 51.18m were required. Ischke Senekal was probably quite happy with her new pb of 51.18m and not expecting to make the final.
