The “Gothaer Schloss-Meeting” is a well known shot put event in Germany. The former German shot putter Andy Dittmar is the one organizing this great event. The women shot put competition just finished with a new meeting record of 20.34m by Lijiao Gong. Christina Schwanitz placed 2nd with 20.08m and Gao Yang 3rd with 18.16.
Every year well known shot putters, especially from Germany and China, are comping to Gotha, Germany. This well organized shot put event is good for great results. The previous meeting record of 19.86m for the women was held by Nadine Kleinert. Today, Christina Schwanitz and Lijiao Gong both broke the previous mark.
During the first round Lijiao Gong opened already big with 19.57m, getting close to the meeting record. Christina Schwanitz was not able to throw beyond the 19m mark with her first effort of 18.79m. The other Chinese thrower Gao Yang threw 17.10m to be placed 3rd after the second round.
During the 2nd round Gong smashed the previous meeting record with a 20m toss. She threw the 4kg ball to 20.03m to increase her lead. And again, Christina Schwanitz answered, but not big enough. Her 2nd attempt was 19.77m. Gao Yang increased to 18.03m with her 2nd attempt and increasing the gap to the 4th place. Sara Gambetta threw a new personal best with her 2nd attempt of 17.20m to be 4th for now.
In round three Gong further increased her lead. She tossed the 4kg ball to 20.34m, which is just one centimeter below her personal best from 2009. Schwanitz, still not being able to go beyond the 20m mark with her 3rd round toss of 19.96m. During the 4th round only Melissa Boekelmann form the Netherlands improved her position with 17.53m to take the 4th place. Finally in the 5th round Schwanitz moved the 4kg implement also beyond the 20m mark, 20.08m to be exact. It was not enough to win the competition and there the victory goes to the Chinese shot putter Lijiao Gong with a new meeting record of 20.34m.
