For the first time in a very very long time the self crowned discus queen Sandra Perkovic was beaten by another discus thrower. As already stated couple of days ago the Cuban discus throwers are taking over. Now it was time to make that really happen. At today’s Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, Yaimi Perez beat Sandra Perkovic with her new personal best of 67.13m.
The past couple of years no one could beat the Croatian discus thrower Sandra Perkovic. She was so consistent throwing over 67m+ no one was in reach. But today things have changed. Denia Caballaro, who is leading the world at the moment, opened the competition with strong 66m. Perkovic was not able to throw even over 65m which is quite unusual for her. Even Yaimi Perez was throwing better during the first attempt. Her throw landed after 65.40m. The Austrlian Dani Samuels threw 64.48m in her first round getting also really close to Sandra Perkovic’s throw.
The second round was even more impressive. Denia Caballero underlined her great shape with another 66m throw, to be exact 66.04m. Sandra Perkovic did not improve her first round throw but still was in 3rd place when the second round finished. Her second attempt was 63.74m. Dani Samuels fouled her second attempt. Melina Robert–Michon improved further to 63.78m, followed by Nadine Müller 63.52m.
During the third round Sandra Perkovic underlined her position in the women discus throw with the exact same distance Yaimi Perez threw in her second attempt (67.06m). Having a better second best throw, Sandra was still “only” second. Denia Caballero did not improve any further and ended the competiton with her best attempt of 66.04m.
Yaimi Perez did not want to end the competition with having the same distance as the second place Sandra Perkovic. She threw the 1kg implement in round 5 to 67.13m to make sure she will win the competition fair and square. Dani Samuels improved in round 4 to 64.59m
Is there now a change in the women discus throne?! Who know what the World Championships in Beijing might bring. At least Throwholics is very excited about it
I am happy to have won in a very competitive field. This being my personal best, it feels great. I am now going home for the Panamerican Championships and I hope to do well there.
