The women’s discus event at the Pan American Games has finished with two Cubans and American on top of the podium. Denia Caballero, the current world leader in the women’s discus became Pan American champion with 65.39m. She was followed by Yaime Perez 64.99m and Gia Lewis-Smallwood 61.26m.
The Cubans are on their way to take over the women’s discus world. Denia fouled her first attempt before taking the lead in the competition with her 2nd round throw of 62.71m. Yaime Perez beat her best attempt with a good 64.99m throw to take over the lead. Denia Caballero knew how she should respond and did that very effectively with 65.39m to take back the lead. Until the end, there were no changes anymore. Denia Caballero won the competition in front of her compatriot Yaime Perez and the American Gia Lewis-Smallwood.
Denia Caballero fouled her remaining three attemps and Yaime still tried to better Denia’s 65m throw. Yaime was not able to do so but had another good 64m throw in her last attempt. Gia Lewis-Smallwood placed 3rd with her 4th attempt of 61.26m and Fernanda Martins 4th with 60.50m.
