The USATF Outdoor Championships shot put event has just ended minutes ago. It looks like it that Joe Kovacs, Christian Cantwell, Jordan Clarke and Reese Hoffa will be traveling to Beijing to fight for the shot put medals at the World Championships.
At todays USATF Outdoor Championships the tickets for the upcoming World Championships will be handed out. The shot put event was quite promising for excitement. So many big names were on the start list for the event. In order to make the final 8 one needed impressive 20.51m (67′ 3 1/2″). In addition to the top three of his competition Reese Hoffa has a wild card by winning last years edition of the Diamond League.
During the first round Darrell Hill made a name for himself by a massive toss of 20.80m (68′ 3″). He was leading until Christian Cantwell managed to surpass Darrell with his second round toss of 21.17m (69′ 5½”). Jonathan Jones improved in round three to 20.92m (68′ 7¾”) which puts him in fourth place. Also Reese Hoffa improved in the 3rd round and broke the 21m barrier with 21.18m (69′ 6″). He was not the only one, also Jordan Clarke managed to toss over the 21m mark with an effort measured 21.11m (69′ 3¼”). At the end of the third round Christian Cantwall was still leading the field and improved even further with a massive 21.45m (70′ 4½”) toss. Still no sign of Joe Kovacs, who is currently leading the world with couple of 22m (72′ 2¼”) bombs.
During the final 8 rounds couple of changes where made. Joe Kovacs underlined his impressive 2015 shape with the winning throwof 21.84m (71′ 8″). Jordan Clarke surpassed with his 6th round toss of 21.49m (70′ 6¼”) even Christian Cantwell who did challenge Clarke with his last round effort as well. Christian pushed everything into the last round and improved his best to 21.64m (71′ 0″) to secure the second spot on the USA team for Beijing, China. Reese Hoffa did not improve any further during the final three rounds, same as Jonathan Jones and Darrell Hill. Also quite surprisingly Ryan Whiting was not playing a major role at todays competition, finishing 7th with a best attempt of 20.79m (68′ 2½”).
Even though Reese Hoffa “only” placed 4th at today USATF Outdoor Championships, he still makes the team for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing China, due to his last years winning strike at the Diamond League race.
Congratulations to Joe Kovacs, Christian Cantwell and Jordan Clarke. Throwholics wishes good luck for the WC in Beijing. It is going to be interesting to see the fight versus the German Goliath David Storl who won both past WC in 2011 and 2013.
