At the opening press conference of the European Athletics Association (EAA) for the Team Championships in Cheboksary (Russia;. 21/22 June) all athletes of the DLV were optimistic. “I want to help and contribute full points for Germany so that we can defend title even if it is difficult,” said European Champion Christina Schwanitz.
Christina Schwanitz is the German favorite for a victory at the team championship, for which there are twelve points. Christina is with her new personal best of 20.77m from Beijing, China the dominant shot putter in the world. She eager to compete this weekend. “I find this type of competition really good. Here you can live the team spirit, ” said the 29-year-old at the press conference in Cheboksary. After her well recovery from knee surgery last year Christina shines with consistent good performances throughout the entire season.
A special planning was necessary for the traveling athletes. Except for Russia, Belarus and Poland all other teams from United Kingdom, Finnland, italy, Spain, France, Norway, Sweden and Ukraine flew in addition to the Germans from Frankfurt to Cheboksary.
Arena in Russian colors
The Arena, which seats are lined up partly in the colors of the Russian flag, is sold out on both days with 12,000 spectators. With 110 hours of live television broadcast is the European Athletic Team Championship viewable throughout Europe. “This shows once again that we are having this format on the right track,” said EAA Director General Christian Milz at the press conference and the new EAA Chairman Sven-Arne Hansen added:. “The Team Championship is a modern format for athletics with perspective. ”
