The season opener for German’s best discus throwers is on the rise. All fit athletes are going to compete in Wiesbaden and are looking forward for the perfect conditions. Only Olympic Champion Robert Harting and the European Championships bronze medallist Shanice Craft are not going to compete in Wiesbaden due do rehab.
The Vice World Champion of 2011, Nadine Müller, Anna Rüh and Julia Fischer (4th and 5th of the European Championships in Zurich last year), lead from a national perspective, the strong women field in Wiesbaden. But also Kristin Pudenz is able to throw further than 60m.
Last year, Julia Fischer threw a new personal best of 66.46m which also was the best German result from the competition. But one thrower was even better than that. The Australian Dani Samuels,2009 World Champion, then scratched with 67.99m even at the Australian record. She will be competing again this year, as well as three throwers from China. Among the Chine tripple is the Jian Tan who placed 6th at the last World Championships.
Martin Wierig the favorite
In men’s competition Martin Wierig will be the favorite in the ring. His personal best is 68.22m, no one else has thrown that far in 2015 yet. In absence of Robert Harting Martin Wierig is the top favourite to win the competition. The Olympic Champion is not fit to compete due to his cruciate ligament tear and will miss the 20th version of the throwing cup.
Daniel Jasinski is also looking forward to throw big again. His personal best is , same as for Julia Fischer, thrown at last years edition of the throwing cup. He threw 65.98m which would be enough to overcome the qualification standard for the upcoming World Championships.
Christoph Harting will represent the family name Harting. He is looking forward to throw over 65m since he has not done it yet. In 2013 he missed the 65m by only 1cm and in 2014 he was not able to throw big. Also Olympic participant Markus Münch is looking for a good and solid season opener. It is still not 100% sure if Benn Harradine will be competiting, he suffered a minor injury and has not made a final decision yet. He was the one who made the croud laugh with his “Hulk Costume”
Attack on the international standards
In addition to the victory, the hope is also for the qualification standard of the World Championships in Beijing, China. The men have to throw 65m and the women 61.50m. The young athletes have the U23, U20 European Championships and the U18 World Championships standards in their mind. Quite a few throwers are able to throw the standard easily.
U20 athlete Claudine Vita must only confirm her good form of spring. Several times, the 5th of the World Championships threw already the 50m qualification standard this year. Also the U20 Vize World Champion Henning Prüfer will be looking out for the qualification standard of 56m.
Strong shot put fields
With the 60m throwers Tony Zeuke, Maximillian Klaus and the one year-younger Clemens Prüfer and Lara Kempka, both medalist at the 2014 U18 Youth Olympic Games, more throwers are looking forward to beat the qualification standard. Many of them are planning a double start and also confirmed to throw in the U23 age group.
In addition to he Discus even, also the shot put is on the program for which a number of prominent throwers have confirmed to compete. Tobias Dahm, who competed at the Indoor European Championships, is leading start list just infront of Artur Hoppe. U20 World Championship participant Laura Jokeit is going to start her first season in the senior class. U18 victory is probably only going over Julia Ritter who just threw a new U18 German national record.
