Who do you coach?
I coach Seema Antil Punia from India and Rutger Smith from the Nederlands. Both are discus throwers but Rutger has thrown the shot put up until this year.
Where do you train?
We train in Southern California in Newport Beach and also in Irvine.
What is the core of your off season training goals, Philosophy?
Well the primary goal is always to throw farther, but early on in the throwing season we are trying to increase fitness levels and increase work capacity. Along with that we are always trying to improve technique and strength levels.
Do your athletes throw in the off season? If so, what is the goal of the throwing?
We do throw in the off-season, our goal is to establish good timing, good positions and increase specific strength and work capacity.
What weight lifting exercises do you focus on? Does that change during the competitive season?
We use an array of exercises throughout the season, our core exercises are the Olympic lifts, squats and bench but we do many different variations of each depending on the time of the year. Along with our core exercises we do many sport special exercises to strengthen specific muscles and muscle groups used in the discus movements.
Are you going to try anything new this off season?
Nothing really new that we will be doing this season although this will be the first year that Rutger has done only one event so it will be interesting to see how his body reacts to only doing the discus and not having to throw the shot, both mentally and physically.
Are you using any new equipment?
Is there anything you would like to do but cannot?
What do you do to relax? Vacation planned?
Vaction time is over for this year, only work
What do you do for your own fitness and health?
I use most of my own toys to stay in shape, Indian clubs, Macebells, Kettlebells, some barbell work like bench and cleans. I also hit the heavy bag most everyday.
What are your goals for 2015 and 2016?
Our goals for the 2015 and 2016 seasons for both Seema and Rutger are to put ourselves in a position to be on the podium at the 2015 Worlds in Beijing and to do the same at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. I feel that both of my throwers are ready to take the next step in their careers to accomplish these goals.
When will your training group compete again?
Our first competition will be in the last week of January or first week of February, just a easy early season all comers type meet. Our first planned big meet of the season will be the Triton Invite in La Jolla in April.
