Throwholics did a follow up interview with the “Masher” Matty Denny after his great performance from last weekend. He placed second at the 2015 Queensland Track Classic competition, as already mentioned in our latest article “Clash of the Yowies! w/ video”.
Who do you currently train with?
I currently train with my coach Grahame Pitt, Lara Neilsen (Commonwealth Games rep in hammer) and many other young up-and-coming Australian throwers. Everyone one in our group is in the top-3 if not 1st in Australia at the moment for their age-group.
Do you see yourselves training together with Julian Wruck in the future?
Like Wrucky said, we train on occasion when we see each other or are near each other and I love training with him, it gives me a perspective on where
I need to be to hit that level. I think even though we are fellow Australians and practically best-of-friends. We still need to keep a kinda of rivalry between myself, Wrucky and Benn. Otherwise there will be not as much drive to better each other and the atmosphere will become too placid.
Do you follow a technical model?
We don’t have a really dead-set-model, we work on principles and use other throwers as examples. We find this better so we throw to our body type and not someone else’s.
What technique do you copy, if any?
Practically the same as what I said before, we try to suit things to ourself. As long as it follows what we are working on to the best of our ability, it means it will work.
What is your big goal for 2015?
My goals have changed since the start of the season to what they are now and are continuously changing as I get wiser and really work out what path I will take. I think at this time I’m going to focus on the junior weights [6kg shot put and hammer, 1,75kg discus], and look for big distances which will mean that they should lead to big distances with the open weights.
Are you planning to compete at the World Championships in Beijing, China?
I would love to and it would be a great learning point for my career but if it doesn’t happen I’m not stressed. What ever happens this season will happen and I’m just going to do my best and play it as it comes.
Will you be competing outside of Australia?
Yes, I plan on going over to Europe to compete this year just not positive on dates at this point. But yes that is the aim for this season.
Do you do any coaching?
I do coach occasionally, depending on on my training and if I have time. Also it depends if the kids I coach are wanting to train and if they have time as they are at school most of the year.
I heard you both are attacking Benn Harradine’s national record and are eager to break the 70m mark. How far in the future do you see that happening?
Yeah… well, that’s one of the big goals I find is to get the Open Australian records and then hoping that leads onto other things. But time wise, who knows, depends how well I look after myself, how training goes, how my personal life goes. All depends on everything, but hopefully soon (as in the next 2-4 years) but yeah like I said, just going to let my career play out and do my best.
