Tina Hillman is the defending indoor and outdoor NCAA champion in the shot put at Iowa State.
What do you need to work on and improve?
Technique, technique, technique! I’ve gotten a lot stronger and quicker in the shot circle, but I need to work on certain movements (completely rotating my right foot, keeping my left leg stiff, finishing through on the throw) before I’ll start to reach the numbers I want.
Where will you be living this winter?
Good ol’ Ames, Iowa
Who are you training with?
I’m training with my college coach, Fletcher Brooks. Also with all of my awesome teammates. We’re like a family.
Are you throwing in the off-season in practice?
Yes, I throw shot, disc, and weight right now, but the focus is always on the shot put.
What weight lifting exercises will you do?
A variety of exercises – upper body, lower body, olympic lifts, etc. We do a lifting cycle for a couple weeks before switching it up again.
Do you see your coach much? Who is your coach?
I see my coach nearly every day! Fletcher Brooks is a great coach, completely dedicated to his job and to his athletes.
Are you going to try anything new this off-season? If so, what?
I actually started picking up the hammer (for fun). But other than that, I still throw three times a week, lift three times a week, and have one day off.
What will you do to relax? Vacation planned?
I’m going to Florida this winter to visit an aunt! We’re planning on having a lot of fun in Key West.
When do you plan to compete again?
I think my first meet is sometime in mid-January. I’m so excited to compete again! My last competition was in August, so I’m already chomping at the bit to throw competitively.
