The summer of 2014 was a mirror image of the career of Betty Heidler: There were ups and downs. Betty writes on her website about the season and mentions her next major goal: Olympics 2016
Somewhat surprisingly World Champion 2007, European Champion 2010 and the World Record thros of 79,42m in 2011. These are the sport highlights of Betty Heidler’s career. But she does also know dissapointments. She did not manage to get into the final at the 2005 and 2013 World Championships, as well as the European Championships 2012.
Both kind of moments were also part of the 2014er season.
This year has been patch and characterized by ver good but als ver weak competitions.
Throws between 68 and 78m
After a knee surgery, the season started with 72m. In Halle, the biggest throwing competition in the World, Betty Heidler did not even throw over 70m. In June she improved a lot and threw 78,00m which is also her third-best ever. The individual and the total victory with he German national team at the European Team Championships in Braunschweig followed.
The 10th national title was not meant to be this season. Betty managed to throw only 69,83m and became silver. Also at the European Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, Betty Heidler was not able to place better than the 5th place. “A medal at the European Championships was my goal and missing it based on my good training performance was quite dissapointing”, said the former world record holder Heidler.
The season ended with conciliatory 75.20m at the ISTAF – but also the loss of the world record to Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland; 79.58 m). “I congratulated her, because it was clear that there will be an improvement. It took more than three years. And will not be the last world record in the hammer throw of women,” writes Betty Heidler with some distance. Throwing over distances of 80m are missing after all: The 80m are still a dream and more training for that is needed.
Olympic will be the end of a long career
Betty Heidler is still fired up for big throws even after more than ten years in the world rankings. She still does not loose sight from the 80m.
To clear all the discussions: Rio 2016 will be my last major competition. Until then, I will do my best. I know that I’m good and I know that I can show these new spheres of 80m throws.
The next world championships year is more a training year for Brazil.
Last autumn Betty Heidler changed her training location from Frankfurt to Berlin and now the next move is planned. In the surrounding area of Berlin Betty Heidler will try to rest more in her spare time. Betty also provides a glimpse into her private life which underlines her difficult last year. “I have lost two people standing close to me”, said Betty.
At the moment, the Olympic bronze medalist recovered from the turbulent year until the training routine starts again, including her law studies and internship at the Federal Police. The view is facing forward and Betty is dying to get back into the circle. “I am looking foward to the next two years and I hope that I can finish my career with a great result at he Olympig Games in Rio“, said Heidler
