What do you need to work on, improve?
Over the last 6 seasons I have worked a lot of developing power in the weight room by incorporating power lifts and Olympic lifting routines amongst other accessory work. The power to throw 22.50+ is there. I believe at this point in my career being 24 years old leaning out just a little and training a lot more speed (always have but train it more specifically and incorporating new training methods) will be the next step for me as an athlete to reach my next gear, as well as mastering my technique in the ring which is the most important thing.
Where will you be living this winter?
I train and live in Tempe Arizona year round.
Who are you training with?
I lift on my own, my coach dave dumble coaches me in the ring and gives me feedback in my lifting routines and guides me when I need it. He is the man.
Are you throwing in the off-season in practice?
I generally take about 3 months off throwing after the season, I do start drill work though before to get into a rhythm and work on technical things to break down without an implement.
What weight lifting exercises will you do?
Squats, bench, cleans, snatch, and all of their variations so the body never plateaus and keeps improving. I do a lot of accessory work, some lifts I do that I’ve found incredibly beneficial are reverse hypers. Tremendously beneficial for anyone especially if you have low back problems. I work the weak links of my body, if I discover something that is weaker than another body part I focus on bringing it up to par. Also do a lot of speed training with the bench and squat vs bands and chains, plyos, lots of core work.
Do you see your coach much?
I will see him anywhere from 1-3 days a week come throwing and drill time, i see him the most in fall and indoot season. when the collegiate season starts it can be sporadic since his main job his being a collegiate coach.
Who is your coach?
Are you going to try anything new this off-season? If so, what?
Yes, I experimented last season by bulking up to 330-333, I broke 70′ at it but didn’t feel as good at the weight. I’m slimming down slowly to 315-318 and going to focus a lot of speed training.
What will you do to relax?
Eat good food, read, play with my puppy, hang with friends, and of course watch football and sleep.
I went home for the first time in nearly 2 years to Alaska for 3 weeks to visit family and friends right after my season ended.
When do you plan to compete again?
I may train through indoor and focus on outdoors. If so I’ll open in march some time. If I decide to throw in indoor I will do one meet for fun.
