Brittany Smith (born March 25th 1991), shot putter and hammer thrower from Oak Park.
What do you need to work on, improve?
I really need to work on my special strength with both the hammer and shot, in addition to my knowledge of the events. I feel that I do not have enough knowledge just yet of my events which is limiting how I progress in each event, and I am learning more and more each year, but there is plenty room for improvement. I also want to improve on my mental strength and confidence outside of competition.
Where will you be living this winter?
I will be training some in California possibly, but mostly I will be in Illinois dealing with the ridiculous winters, which are hopefully much better than last year. I also have a job at my university, so I will be working as well, which limits the amount of traveling I do for training.
Who are you training with?
As of right now, I am training on my own, but I have Tim Glover, who was my teammate that is also around, so it is nice to have that. Curt Jensen is planning on coming around as well, so I am excited to have the three of us here for the year.
Are you throwing in the off-season in practice?
Yes, I have been throwing for a few weeks now, learning how my body works, and hoping to improve for this upcoming season.
What weight lifting exercises will you do?
As of right now, I am sticking with the basic Olympic lifts, but I am not sure what my coach has in mind for the future because I am new to this type of training.
Who will you train with?
I am not sure who I will train with, but I am looking into different options for next season.
Do you see your coach much? Who is your coach?
I recently asked Greg Watson to help coach me, and it has been great, however, I do not see much of him at the moment, but we are keeping in contact every week, and keeping track of my training. Even though I would like to have him there every day at practice, I think this year will allow me to find my independence as a professional thrower. I have learned so much about myself as a thrower these past few weeks just by throwing on my own, and trying to figure out how I want to approach each practice, whether it is mentally or physically.
Are you going to try anything new this off-season? If so, what?
My entire training program is new, I have never been on a consistent program before, and to be set on something that is very consistent is different for me as a thrower. I have had different workouts here and there, but to have something tailored to me as a shot putter, and hammer thrower feels great, and it allows me to feel more in tune with myself mentally and physically.
What will you do to relax?
So far, I have no vacations planned, because I never know where I will be each week during the season, and I would rather put my money into training for the next few years, but I just plan to spend time with my family, friends, and boyfriend during the holidays, and school breaks, which I like to consider my vacation.
When do you plan to compete again?
I will start competing in January to get ready for USA Indoors in Boston, but other than that, I am looking forward to the outdoor season!
