Yesterday we announced that Robert Harting wants to be taken off the list for the IAAF World Athlete of the Year nomination and this morning we had brief Q&A with Harting. (Exclusive Interview). Now top IAAF offical Helmut Digel understands the position of three-time discus world champions Robert Harting. He can understand that Robert Harting does not want to be on the same list as the doping offender Justin Gatlin to be nominated for the World Athlete of the Year award.
I think this is his personal decision that everyone can understand. The nomination of Gatlin was questionable decision because not only a successful season is taken into account for the nomination.
Digel, who is a dedicated anti-doping fighter for many years accepts the decision of the top German athlete Robert Harting. At the same time Digel stresses that the American sprinter Gatlin had served his sentence.
Then you have to allow for the re-integration, the is the same for sport.
Anyway, the Olympic Champion Harting does not believe he would win the award.
I cannot and should not win. The brand Robert Harting rips apart the association gene. I think I feel that Germany is very critical when it comes to moral judgments. Surely, we should not constantly question everything critically. Yes other countries have not understood what is at stake. Other countries do not submit to the moral, but only to the flag.
I do compete in an event which is economically not profitable for the IAAF. Jumps and sprinting events are far more important for the fossil chromosomes of the IAAF. It would simply bring nothing to give me that title.
