Couple of weeks ago David Storl posted a video to his Facebook fanpage throwing some discus. According to www.welt.de and his comment on Facebook, is Storl is ready to battle for the best discus thrower in Germany? Is David Storl serious about it?
If his results are any indication, he said without training he threw the 2kg implement over 60m, we could be in for another doubler. He titled the video on Facebook as “My comeback as a discus thrower”.
“It was a lot of fun. My technique is still working. Without any preparation it is quite a good result. I like the idea of being a shot put world champion and maybe adding a medal with the discus? Who knows what will happen. If I would really traing and focus on discus I’m quite sure that I can gain a couple of meters.”
It is not very common to do both events at a very high level but it happend already. At the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens the American Robert Garret won first the shot put event and afterwards the discus. Americans Mac Wilkins had success with all four throws and John Godina threw 1998 leading world marks in shot and discus.
The other issue here is Germany has a nice stable of discus throwers, so even if Storl can get to 63m that won’t be enough to wear the German vest in the 2,5m ring at a major championship.
Who knows what will happen, it might all be just a promotional joke (… that sucked us in). Throwholics is definitely looking forward to see David Storl again in the discus ring at major comps ; )
