The former national coach Gerd Böttcher died unexpectedly on Easter weekend. The 68 -year-old celebrated his probably biggest success as a coach in 1996 as a discus thrower Ilke Wyludda won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA).
Gerhard Böttcher was not only the coach of Wyludda but he is also the former coach of the current best German women discus thrower Nadine Müller. He retired after the 2009 World Championships in Berlin and Rene Sack took over. “This is heavy… We need to process it.” Yesterday Rene and Nadine were on their way to the training camp in Portugal.
With Gerd Böttcher, who was himself a former hammer thrower, the athletics worldlist an expert regarding throwing. He was also the co-found and one of the main organizers of the world biggest throwing festival “Hallesche Werfertage” in Halle, Germany. This event will take place on 17th-18th of May.
