Tomorrow the ISTAF Indoor Meet will take place and the reigning Olympic, World and European champion Robert Harting will match his discus skills against the 2010 European champion and 2013 Worlds silver medalist Piotr Malachowski. Furthermore, the two-time defending World champion David Storl will join the shot put competition.
The stage is set for premiere of the ISTAF Indoor
March 1st is the inaugural ISTAF Indoor Meet and the tension for the organizers is rising. This event will set new standards for indoor competitions.
Located next to the Berlin O2 World Storl went on patrol as part of his training at the Federal police in the last fall. His goal is to set a new season best. He relies entirely on the support of the expected 11,000 spectators, because his training is still on track for the Indoor World Championships in Sopot, Poland (March 7th to 9th). “Last week I managed to improve my personal best with the 8,5kg ball,” said the World Champion.
“Everything looks like the 22m will be reached very soon. The workouts are very promising and I think that I can take the next step in my development to reach the 22m.”
The highlight of the evening is the duel between discus world champion Robert Harting (SCC Berlin) and his Polish rival Piotr Malachowski. Harting should like to set a new German indoor record which is currently held by Wolfgang Schmidt with 66.20m (217′ 2″).
Shot Put ( men), 19:37 GMT+1
David Storl is one of the safest German medal hopes at the World Indoor Championships in the coming week . The two-time world champion and European champion a started strong into the season , dropped the ball already 21,33m y. The strongest rivals at this event are Georgi Ivanov ( 20.82 m) and Tomas Stanek ( 20.39 m). Both have come in this season already well beyond the 20 -meter mark .
Discus throw ( men) , 21:15 GMT+1
Anything other than a success of the Olympic champion Robert Harting or his longtime rival Piotr Malachowski would be a huge surprise . In the indoor premiere of a discus competition are both indeed highly motivated but they both said it will only go 63-64m. Both are in the strength training phase and do not expect too much. The (unofficial ) world record in the indoor discus throw is probably not in danger. The Estonian Gerd Kanter had best performance on 22 January 2009 set up with a throw of 69.51 m in Vaxjö (Sweden). The German record holds Wolfgang Schmidt with 66.20 meters , set in 1980 in Berlin- Hohenschonhausen . The 66.20m is the mark Robert wants to attack.
Piotr Malachowski is Harting‘s favorite opponent. After 35 successful competitions and 1024 days in a row without defeat Malachowski ended Harting‘s winning streak last year.
Robert Harting: “I am very happy that the organizers could sign Piotr. This guarantees a world class competition. He wants to beat me at the first ISTAF INDOOR meeting in history and at our first competition in a roofed arena.”
