Hundreds of journalists have selected the athlete of the year with two big surprises. Discus World Champion Robert Harting, who won last year already the athlete of the year award, and javelin thrower Christina Obergföll won Germany’s atheletes of the year awards. Both of them won gold at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Hamburg, Germany – Javelin World Champion Christina Obergföll and discus World Champions Robert Harting won Germany’s athelete of the year awards. Hundreds of journalists have selected the athlete of the year and surprised quite a view with their votes.
Harting achieved 2920 points and the expected winner Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel became second with “only” 2788 points. For Robert it was already the second athlete of the year award, and even better the second in a row. “I’m surprised”, said Robert Harting at the ceremony because he thought Vettel would win the vote. Third was pole vaulter Raphael Holzdeppe (1893), who also brought home the gold medel at the recent World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
In the women triumphed Obergföll ( 3552 ) and entered in the footsteps ofjavelin thrower Steffi Nerius. Nerius won the athlete of the year award in 2009, when she achieved gold at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany. ” The heart is beating… , It’s incredible. This is more than a cherry on a cake”, said the 32- year-old.
Obergföll had won her first gold at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia after five silver at World and European Championships and Olympic Games. Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki came with 2806 points in second place. Third went to ski star Maria Riesch – Hoefl ( 1455 ) .
