Lithuania´s Zinaida Sendriuté leads the women´s discus qualification with a decent 64.16m (210′ 6″). Her personal best is 65.97m (216′ 5″).
2nd was Yarelys Barrios (Cuba) with 63.63m (208′ 9″) and 3rd Sandra Perković with 63.62m (208′ 8″). Germany´s Nadine Müller was 5th with 63.16m (207′ 2″). They all needed just one attempt to hit the automatic qualifying distance of 63m. 4th was Jian Tan (China) with 63.21m.
Former world champion Dani Samuels threw 62.85m (206′ 2″) to move through to the final.
These performances do not carry over to the finals so their place is meaningless. Everyone starts with a clean slate for finals.
Mac Wilkins shared how, in 1976, he sat in his hotel room the night after qualifying knowing he was going to win the gold medal after dominating qualifying. One wonders the thoughts of these women going into the final.
