Asian record holder Ehsan Hadadi’s name is not listed next to other discus warriots Kantor, Harting and Małachowski on the the discus qualification entry list at the World Championships in Moscow.
The reasons behind this rare situation may be the conflict between Hadadi and Iranian Athletics Federation and by extension, the Iranian government. Earlier this year Hadadi reported that he may feel compelled to refuse his invitation the World Championships is response to a lack of promised financial and logistical support from Iranian Athletics Federation.
Like Val Adams at the London Olympics, Hadadi is currently in Moscow but his name is not on the entry list. Sadly, unlike the Kiwi’s situation, this one will not be resolved in a way pleasing to throwing fans in the short term. In the long term this may show governments they cannot bully athletes at their whim. Was it really the conflict between him and Iranian Athletics Federation that resulted in the situation or is there an unreported and sudden injury keeping Hadadi sidelined?
