Robert Harting’s goal was it to get closer to the 70m during his next competitons. Two weeks ago he opened the season with 68,31m (224′ 1″) in Wiesbaden and was not really satisfied with his technique. Today in Eugene he won the Diamond League Meeting with impressive 69,75m (228′ 10″).
Today at the 4th Diamond League Meeting in Eugene Robert Harting came very close to his goal of hitting the 70m in the next competitions. He only missed out the 70m (229′ 7″) mark by 25cm (9″).
The fight for the first place was only between Piotr Malachowski and Robert Harting. The former European Champion Piotr Malachowski opened the competition with 66,50m (218′ 2″) and Robert Harting the Olympic, World and European Champion followed with 67,17m (220′ 4″).
The Iranian discus thrower Ehsan Hadadi had a first round throw of 63,07m (206′ 11″) and the German Martin Wierig started with 60,38m (198′ 1″). The former Olympic Champion Gerd Kanter and the Indian Vikas Gowda both fouled their first attempts.
The second round was a bit more promising as Gowda threw 63,30m (207′ 8″) and Ehsan Hadadi improved to 64.14m (210′ 5″). But it was the round of the big guys Piotr and Robert. Piotr surpassed Robert Hartings first round throw of 67,16m (220′ 4″) with impressive 68,19m (223′ 8″) which is also his new season best. The “King in the Ring” Robert Harting countered Piotr attack for the lead again. By only being 25cm (9″) off the 70m (229′ 7″) he underlined his passion of winning. His second round throw was measure 69,75m (228′ 10″).
During the third round Martin Wierig tried to grab the bronze with his punch to 65.54m (215′) but Ehsan Hadadi did not accept this and threw 65,63m (215′ 3″) to stay in the third place. Piotr threw 66,99m (219′ 9″) and Harting fouled his third round throw.
Hadadi was very consistent throughout the entire competition and threw one more time over the 65m (213′ 3″) mark. During the fourth round he managed to throw 65,45m (214′ 8″). His last attempts where measured at 64,11m (210′ 4″) and 64,16m (210′ 5″). Martin Wierig tried his best but couldn’t overtake Ehsan Hadadi. He fouled the fourth and sixth attempt and could not improve during the fifth round with his 62,98m (206′ 7″).
It was a fight between Piotr Malachowski and Robert Harting, only one of them was in shape to win the competition. Both presented themselves in a really good shape. Piotr’s remaining throws were 66.58m (218′ 5″) in the fourth and 66,89m (219′ 5″) in the fifth attempt. And the foul in the last round secured Robert the first place.
Robert Harting was leading all the way through the competition and countered every attack for the first spot by Piotr. During the fourth round he countered Piotrs throw with 67,42m (221′ 2″) and his fifth round throw was measured exactly 68m (223′ 1″). The goal to reach the 70m was not achieved by Robert Harting because he fouled also the last attempt.
This competition was the 35th in Robert Harting’s winning streak. Only the discus legend Virgilijus Alekna has achieved to win more competitions in a row. He is still the record holder with 37 in a row.
