Spontaneously, the hammer throwers of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen had decided to test their good training condition in a competition. During their training camp in Split (Croatia), the protégés of trainer Helge Zöllkau took part in an international meeting. And this spontaneity paid off.
Out of the full training Markus Esser threw 77.99m (255′ 10″). Only the day before this competition the hammer thrower squad had heared about it and decided spontaneously to compete in order to check their current performance. “This morning I have trained and then I competed in in the afternoon,” said Markus Esser. He missed the World Championship qualificaiton standard only by 1.01m (Moscow, 10th-18th August). “With a normal preparation and not a training session right before the competition the qualification standard should be doable,” said Germany’s best hammer thrower. “The current training condition and my recent throws are really fun.”
Markus’ teammate Sven Möhsner became second with 68.34m (224′ 2″). Paul Hützen, a promising contendor for the U23 European Championships in Tampere, Finnland, threw 66.49m and finished fourth. The qualification standard for the U23 European Championships is 70m (229′ 7″). Couple of weeks ago he came very close to the qulification standard by throwing 68.33m (224′ 2″) in Leichlingen, Germany.
The victory in the junior women also went to Leverkusen. The German Vice Champion Daniela Manz won with 59.68m (195′ 9″). Sarah Lippold landed in third place with 58.43m (191′ 8″). “I want to finally throw over 60m (196′ 10″),” said the U23 athlete who want to throw the standard for the U23 European Championships. 64m (209′ 11″) is the qualification standard. This year Sara Lippold has increased her best to 59.15m (194′).
The first meeting at which one can throw the qualification standard for the U23 European Championships and World Championships is on 18th – 19th of May, held at the international hammer throw meeting in Fränkisch-Crumbach. Markus Esser wants to clear the standard right away.
